Great synopsis, Boatist. My wife and I have taken the USPS basic course, joined the organization, and are signed up for the Seamanship course starting in December. The Power Squadron also offers an engine maintenance class in the Spring that I plan to take. The education committee is also planning an electronics instruction (GPS and the like) course for next year. Torcano, you might want to consider joining a local chapter. They're good...

Quick anchor size Question
Published (2008-11-26 04:31:00)
I recomend a 4 pound Fortress FX-7 rated for boats to 27 feet. I have about 10 anchors. Some came with the saftey package with my boat some I bought and some were given to me. Since we got the Fortress FX-7 wh have used no other anchor. It not a cheap anchor but will not rust and the mud does not stick to it at all. Most important is it digs in faster and deeper than any anchor I have. Also important is the Wife can pull it with out hurting...

Published (2008-11-26 05:22:00)
thanks for the input guys, the marine growth around the stern drive isn't horrible its just if u feel around a couple of the mounts it flaked off so an indicator to me that it was kept in the water for some period of time. i've tried to do some research on the web and found some things about blistering on the fiberglass and i didn't know if that is something i should be concerned with. As i said the rest of the boat is in...

looks great from the pics, i hope it turns out good. i think you're nuts for not making it contingent upon surveyor inspection though. a couple hundred bucks could save you much more if they find anything. great looking boat

Here it is, a 18' Tinny: So somebody took the top off of another boat, and bolted it onto this hull, changing it from an open bow, to a closed. So it fits ok... but not the greatest. the side overhang a little too much, making it a little flexable while leaning/standing/holding onto the sides. Your sitting almost to the front of the boat, and not much leg room...

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good boating course to take during the winter season? I have already taken the basic safe boating course so I am looking for something more advanced perhaps more intensive instruction in chart reading, navigation, emergency procedures and boat handling etc. Does the USCG ofer programs like this?

I have an old boat and see a lot of people who own cool old classic boats here. So I was curious about the average ages of the boats you guys have. I used the multiple choice option for the poll, so if you have boats that are different ages you should be able to choose more than one age category.

Hey everyone, i'm looking to buy a used fishing boat, i'm choosing between a 22' seaswirl striper or a 25' Pro line. The Pro line is being sold at a used boat dealer. I'm leaning more toward the Pro line. The only thing that is holding me up is it has been bottom painted, i'm not real familiar with this as i've only owned trailered boats, the pro line is on a trailer but you can see where there ...

I'm in the market for a used cabin boat, 25-26 feet. I've looked at a couple and I'm going to see a couple more tomorrow. Wife and I are interested in 1 in particular. It's a 1990 Larson 25'. We both like the cabin layout. As soon as I think we've found "the one", I'll be hiring a surveyor to do a pre-purchase inspection. A fellow member of my Power Squadron chapter (who buys and sells boats...

I am thinkin of replacing my navy style anchor with a fluke anchor for better holding power per pound. This question may seen silly but with a 19ft boat should I get an anchor rated for 15 to 19 ft boat or the one rated for 20-24ft.? It doesnt seem to be a likely problem but someone here probably understands the reasons for rating better. Thanks.

Didnt mean to post this thread twice, but I figured I should have put it here in the first place: Hey. Looking to buy our first boat. We just looked at a 1999 Glastron 195 SX today. Had the volvo penta 190 hp 4.3L inboard/outboard. Seemed to run great and have plenty of power at the lake today. The seller is asking 9,200 but comes withOUT a bimini top or tower. He is including a set...

Maybe it's the pentup rebel in me, but I got to thinking about this the other day. I boat in Florida where slow speed/ no wake/ miminal wake zones seem to spring up like spring daisys. The idea of course is to protect our beloved manatees and keep the wake from somehow destroying cement seawalls. So would you be able to zip through these places if you had a hovercraft with no wake? I'm sure that ...

We have two: a 1975 Galaxie tri-hull named FireFry (because it is flame orange), and a 1975 Steary tri-hull named LemonDrop.
