P0402 - Is DPFE the culprit?
Published (2009-11-25 06:24:00)
I have the official Ford Powertrain & emissions manual for the 2005 Escape.Buried in the section on the DPFE is a little warning that nobody mentions. Immediately after fitting a new DPFE you must allow the KOEO at least 5 seconds to 'learn' the new DPFE. It states that if you don't you'll get P0402 again. I presume the trucklet will eventually 'learn' the new DPFE in normal operation but in the meanwhile...

Okay, I ordered the Monroe Sensa Tracs from Amazon for $65. That's the best price; even better than Rock Auto when you factor in free shipping. I may call on some of you for installation instructions when they arrive in a week or so. Thanks, Robert

Right front axle removal
Published (2009-11-23 22:00:00)
I will try getting the alternator out without removing the axle. If that doesn't work, I will put a pan under the transaxle to catch the fluid when I pull out the axle. Appreciate the advice. May not work on it til Wednesday. I will let you know how I make out. Happy Thanksgiving.

I would suggest cleaning the battery terminals and cable clamps, in addition to the grounding point on the chassis.

Published (2009-11-18 10:47:00)
I had new Sensa-Trac shocks and struts installed 6 months ago. The 7 yr old stockers with 93K on 'em were getting a bit harsh over bumps so when Monroe had a $50 rebate earlier this year I ordered them from Rock Auto. The parts total after rebate was $202 (including two new strut bearing plates). I installed the shocks and had a local shop do the struts. The ride/handling balance is quite good and there is no popping - I definitely like...

I can get it from RockAuto.com for $37.79, and I know what brand I'm getting.

I have tried the Airtex and Standard brands, and wound up replacing them within 8-12 weeks. The Motorcraft replacement I have on now has worked flawlessly (KOW!) for 3+ years.
Thanks, I'll stick with one I know works and lasts well....

My Axle came out as one unit. Which doesnt really matter anyway.
Use a LONG prybar to pull down on the Lower Control Arm. It will make it easier to reassemble. Better if you had another to help line up the Splines on the Axle shaft to the Wheel Hub while putting the ball joint together. I did mine solo. But Help would have been appreciated.

well anytime you have that kind of brightwhite bulb, your pretty much signing long-life bulbs away. ive never heard of those lasting more than a couple months. they burn so brightly and hot, that many times, they melt the connectors even if you did the install properly. My recomendation is, Dialetic grease, less than 2 bucks at an auto parts store. squeeze it into the connectors at the...

Why did you replace the calipers? Wouldn't a brake bleed be good enough?

Sometimes a bad connection at the fuel tank or bad fuel pump can cause these issues. It is intermittant and no codes are stored as it is not a sensor issue. However, it is an expensive experiment if I am wrong. I had similar symptoms with a Ford truck.

From what I have gathered, it does seem the motor mounts get rather weak on these vehicles rather quickly. If it is a motor mount, the problem will just come back after 30k miles or so.

I recently changed the struts and shocks for my '05 Escape 56K miles. I installed Monro Sensa-Trac in Oct' 09. The ride was noticeably firmer after the installation. I haven't noticed any popping noises from the shocks or struts. This was the first thing that I did after hearing a noise when driving over rough roads. Unfortunately this was not the culprit. I spent around $670 in ...
