Okay, folks, just what is it about Firefox 3 that makes it so problematic on a 800 Mhz Windows 2000 computer, with 512 MB of memory? I finally gave in and decided to "trade in" my faithful Firefox 2.0.0.20 and give Firefox 3.0.8 a try. I have been using the latter for seven days now. I think some of your question may be answered here. MS used to provide updates for MS Java Virtual machines. Some MS word programs, Open Office are Dependant upon JAVA depending how it is being used. http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx
