That plug you are showing.....does that have USB on both ends? I ask because i cant seem to find the cord belonging to one of my favourite external drives and it seems to have a USB on both ends, one usb for the drive and one usb for the mac but i dont seem to reall ever seeing ords that have usb on both ends. Would that one you are showing be one I could use? If so, does it have a particular name I could ask for it by? TIA

I use Graphic Converter for two things. First I use it to create catalog (index) sheets of my photos. I do 40 images per 8x10 sheet. It gives me a huge degree of control as to image size and resolution, background colour, font, font size and font colour. I print these which makes it possible to find any photo even those that have been archived and removed from my main HD. I also use it to rename entire folders full of photos. Allows me to...

Mac Mini processor upgrades?
Published (2009-12-06 22:27:00)
Yeah, I read that today too unfortunately. Because the FSB is 800, it's not compatible. I was hoping that it could be backwards compatible like RAM is. So looks like the fastest processor we can install is the T7600. Still though, 2.33Ghz is pretty decent. Plus going from a Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo should also offer a noticeable bump in performance. If I can find a great deal on the processor, I'll grab one and give this a go. I...

Which model WD portable hard drive did you buy? All the portable hard drives I ever bought, even just the cases, came with the cable that chas_m shows in his post. The two USB connectors on the left plug into two USB ports on the Mac. That allows the hard drive to draw more power - ie draw the power from two USB ports rather than only one. The little mini connector on the right plugs into your portable drive assuming it has that type of...

Shame about the lack of an Airport Card. They can be difficult to find from a trusted EhMac member at a reasonable price. Oh, wait!! Original Airport Card--$35

Why would anyone want to do this? You have a fresh, new system on a much better computer and you want to use an old HD in a new computer? This makes zero sense to me. Simply transfer the data from the MacBook to the MBP and start with everything new. Your new HD will last much longer than the old one out of the MacBook too.

When you start up your new computer for the first time, it will ask if you are transferring from another Mac. Say yes. Follow the instructions. Enjoy.

Does the OS effect the Time Machine restoration? Such as can data be backed up on a machine with an older OS than the destination machine and vice versa?

People seriously over think the whole Migration Assistant concept. Breathe. Relax. Hook 'em up and let 'er rip. Honestly. We need a sticky on the subject. Run Migration Assistant. Once done, it'll answer and void every question in your thread, except one: No, Migration Assistant does not move any data from an external drive connected to your old iMac. Connect your external to your i5 ...

A quick search on MacUpdate (you should try it!) shows plenty of cheap controllers for CP290, but the really powerful home stuff runs from $100 to $200. Indigo seems to be the most highly-regarded from what I can tell (I do not use X10 stuff at all). If you're looking for JUST something that controls the Smarthome Powerlinc USB stuff, there's Shion which is very cheap at $35.

One thing to note, be careful with those USB cards as some will crash your Mac if you try to put it to sleep, it might not sleep, or it might sleep but the fans will still be running, sometimes at full blast. I believe there is a special kind that does not have these problems, but I'm not sure if they make them anymore or what they're called. About the video card, I wouldn't invest too...

The system fonts are locked for a reason -- they are needed by the system and the system will not function properly without them. Years ago I accidentally removed one (can't recall which one now) to replace it with the PS version, and suddenly windows could not be drawn properly!! That mess was a real challenge to clean up, I might add. So no, you can't "get rid of them." But you can have ...

I have found TM Error Logger (donationware) an invaluable tool for tracking down these sorts of problems, as what it does is show you the log and point to where the problem exists. In this case, though, I think the message spells it out pretty clearly: the sparse image Time Machine makes has become corrupt for some reason and won't mount (ie be written to). If the logs point to a ...

I'm looking to upgrade the 4 Seagate 750s in my '08 Mac Pro, so I'm roughly in the same situation. I'd considered the WD drives but was catching a few wiffs of heat and noise issues. First, you need a retail disc of Snow Leopard -- a disc that came from another Mac won't work on her Mac unless the two Macs are identical. (In every way -- not just processor way.) Secondly, unless you're holding down the "C" key on restart with the SL disc inserted, it won't automatically boot from the disc. You need to hold down the "C" key on restart. Thirdly, you don't need to ...

I never use anything but the lid to put my MBP to sleep, but I recently noticed my Mac Mini taking over 30 seconds to go to sleep using the menu. FWIW, I ran OnyX and the Mini now goes to sleep instantly.

My first thought is that you (or someone) renamed your user folder, so the system can no longer find the user those photos belong to. If that's the case, you're in for a world of hurt.

a. Boot from your backup hard drive, which has a cloned copy of your boot drive. RIGHT? b. Buy/borrow a external DVD reader (at least), boot from that. FW better than USB2 for that sort of thing, but whatever's available and cheap should work. c. Get the optical drive in your iMac fixed (most expensive option).
