Apple designs OS X with the assumption that it will be running on a "known set" of hardware. Running it on anything other than that "known set" may introduce issues for which you have no recourse. My prediction for the future is that Apple will start incorporating MORE, not less, custom-designed stuff inside their machines in the years ahead in an effort to ensure that OS X continues to run best on Apple...

Quote: the 'heavist lifting" I will do is use Keynote to make presentations. I use a lot of video in my presentations. Will a MBA be able to handle that? Will it be able to project the movie clips on the computer screen and through a projector at the same time? Thanks in advance for your opinion. you you would be a-ok with that.

Tax breaks

In the US small businesses could always right off a significant amount in equipment purchases on a one time basis. Was $10,000 back in the 80s probably a lot more now. So this has to be specific to Canada. Is a great idea, if you have a good year buy needed equipment rather than forking it over to the tax man.

There's a big thread already for people's thoughts on the Magic Mouse.
Magic Mouse - who's getting one?
It does suck that they took out all the extra features of the Mighty Mouse. But, the Magic Mouse makes up for it a bit by being so cool and useful with the Momentum Scroll. I have every bit of faith that Apple will be able to put in two and maybe three-finger gestures in time with...

A battery cycle is going from charged to discharged to charged. Batteries always left charging and not properly tended to will have a shorter lifespan than those that are cared for.
Apple has an official doc on battery calibration:

People who tend to do that are ignoramuses. I don't generally waste any time with such people.
So no, it doesn't bother me.
PS. The pronunciation of "fanboi" is fan-BWAH. It is correctly spelled (and pronounced) fanBOY.

I switch between a MacBook Pro & a MacBook Air. The thing about the Air is that it truely aims at a small market. A few questions to ask you:
How often do you find yourself running Windows?
What applications do you need.... Windows & Mac?
How techy are you? (Ex. If no external dvd drive, do you think you could remotely install software from an alternate Mac or PC)?
Do you have a ...

Smoke makes computers disgusting to work on, and I have no doubt the tar and other crap damages the components. I have no sympathy for those that smoke at their computers, or around others.

I agree that Snow Leopard has been less than stellar. I have 4 GB of RAM in my 2.66 Ghz early 2009 MBP and ever since upgrading to 10.6 when using RapidWeaver, I get warnings that it has used an inordinate amount of memory and it should be restarted. I have approximately 300 files in the current RW document.
Under Leopard, I routinely had over 1,000 files in one document and never once had ...

If you are considering one of the Mac Pro, why don't you consider the quad-core iMac??
There is a thread here that show how powerful they are even compared to the current Mac Pro offering and cheaper.
Other than that I have a friend who have an iMac 24" top of the line of previous gen, and is it correct. For what you need I'd say consider a mac with a very good GPU, but you will get ...

Has Apple discontinued the USB modem dongle?
My Aunt just bought a new iMac, and was wondering how to fax from it, through her printer/scanner/copier. I told her she needed the Apple modem, but it seems like it's no longer available at the Apple store. I saw a third party one at U o of T's computer shop downtown a couple of weeks ...

What do you need in order to use your MBP as a PVR?
Is it possible to use your MBP as a PVR? I quite tired of paying Rogers $25 per month to rent a PVR and don't want to pay $500 to buy one of their crappy PVRs to own. What would I need in order to use my MBP to record video. I know I need to get a HD box for the HD TV still, ...

You will get some extremely polarized opinions on this, mostly based on people's experience with any one brand. I have a Tom Tom GO 730, and it works very well with my Mac. I like it's interface, ability to have map updates from other people correcting the map, and the IQ routes technology is better (in my opinion) than what you'll get from Garmin or Magellan for route planning.

Is the upgrade from i5 TO I7 worth it?
For the Imacs, It's ether get an I7 and stick with 4 gigs of ram or get 8 gigs of ram and go with an I5. My budget will not allow me to do both.
What should I do?

Who GAVE you two MacBooks? And recent-ish ones! That's insane!
Anyway, I think the performance for day-to-day stuff is gonna be similar on those two machines. It comes down to two things: IMHO:
Glossy vs. Matte Screen and Portability.
Depends on what you value most. If you value protability most - then keep the 15" and give the 17" away. 15" is 5.4lbs and 17" is 6.8lbs. That's...
