I picked this up in a coal mine. I know it's a plant fossil but wondered is it just a stain, and if so would it be from the original plant material, or be chemically altered?

Anybody know what this is called. Very well made of quality steel about 4 inches long with a finger tightened bit on each end. Both bits have an reversible insert allowing for 4 different sizes of shafts. I have no idea what the pictured inserted tool is for. The main tool is inscribed around the center "General Hdwe mfg co" "New York USA NO 90". ???

I recently replaced my CRT monitor with a LCD flat screen. I'm trying to calibrate color, contrast and brightness.
