Just remember that SSL <> ITCH, if you use effects heavily, you'll be spending more for the NSFX (as it gives the NS7/ITCH effects). You should also remember that SSL has a sampler and optional video that ITCH doesn't (yet). Bottom line: SSL is more expensive than ITCH, but has (much) more flexibility. If you are a bedroom or mobile DJ, then I'd recommend ITCH for you. If you're aspiring to be a club DJ, then...

Scratch Needle question
Published (2009-12-12 13:00:00)
I need some needles for scratching so i'm looking for something the holds the groove really well and is as minimally damaging to the record as possible. I've heard Shure M44-7s are good and apparently so are Ortofons (coffret and concord?) any other suggestions? Cheaper options would be great.

I don't do this in public, although I'd like to build up the confidence to eventually. I usually put new new songs when I record my mixes - get a reaction and start playing it out.

Every time you practice record, and listen to yourself. You can listen to what you don't like and work on it. It's been working well for me

Do you want to use vinyl or CDs?

Yeah it would be a great first setup for a beginner, granted you're willing
to shell out the steep entry fee and have a powerful enough lappy to run
Itch. If you don't have either of those two things I just mentioned, there
are plenty of alternatives. Just promise me to learn to beatmatch by ear
and not by relying on the waveforms and you'll be all set.

Two sound sources (turntables, cdjs, virtual decks inside of a piece of DJ
software) and a mixer.

There are a few options available. You could go pure vinyl, just CD decks, midi controller or DVS. It all depends on your needs. If you are going to be buying vinyl then stick to the basic turntable and mixer setup. If you are going for portability and you download mp3s, then midi controllers would be a good option. If you's like to use mp3s, but maintain the feel/control of proper equipment, ...

vci 300 or hercules rmx are your best bets as far as dj midi controllers go. Most everyone in this forum will probably agree.
Generally, as far as turntables go, Technics, Stanton, and Vestax are the most reliable brands. I'd suggest looking at craigslist to find a pair of Technics 1200s (regular 1200's, mk II, or m3d). If you do find some deals, make sure that you don't pay anymore than $500,...
