Disk aligning using a DS3300
Published (2009-11-25 06:09:00)
Sorry, i forget about SQL. I don't know how MS SQL works with disk in details. Database Files anyway reside on partition and are spread across NTFS clusters. If we examine situation when we have NTFS partition with 4K cluster and only one SQL Database file. NTFS boot code uses 16 sectors, i.e. 2 clusters or 8K. So, if we assume DB file starts from first available cluster, it will be at 8K shifted from partition beginning. Even through we...

Disk aligning using a DS3300
Published (2009-11-25 19:57:00)
Hi Pavel, Thank you for your post. It clears up my misunderstanding of disk alignment. I am now going to do some testing using Windows Server 2003 STD and the DS3300 storage device. I should be able to post my results here with the theories of what you have mentioned. Thanks for coming back to me! Oli

Disk aligning using a DS3300
Published (2009-11-20 14:48:00)
The problem lies with Windows which "steals" the first 63 sectors of a disk for its system data, starting the "usable" area of disk at sector 64, which messes things up. Most disks are organised with a 64 sector/track physical setup. With the Windows 63 sector use, almost every disk access has to access 2 tracks on the disk to complete. This overhead becomes more apparent when the logical structure of the disk starts on...

I had also this problem, the only way I had success was this one: 1. Set the IP adress via the console-port 2. reboot the controller immediatly after setting the adress. If you change the IP adress with the GUI in some cases it will not be changed. Maybe its a Firmware bug. But with a console session it should be no problem.

For 1), the answer is yes, you need connectivity to both controllers to run many of the Storage Manager functions. Out-of-band is really preferred, especially if you have several DS units since it should allow you to manage them from one instance of Storage Manager, which is generally not the case for in-band unless they are all connected to the same host. This traffic is minimal and all 100 Base T, so consider using an inexpensive unmanaged...

Hi, Which drivers are you using for ibm library? You must use Microsoft drivers. CA Brigstore sometimes dont run with Ibm drivers. Therefore you must uninstall Ibm drivers and you must use micrososft drivers. Then you try again Device Configuration in the Brigstore. You can use IBM Itdt tool for update firmware of Ibm Library. If you need details informations for how to update firmware with itdt, you can contact with me....

Are you using SANSurfer or have a QLogic card installed? Do you get event log errors on that windows machine about vds.exe faulting? (Virtual Disk Service) I was having the "operation did not complete" when initializing error as well, connecting to a LUN on a DS3300 via a QLogic card (using SANSurfer). This hotfix fixed it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ;en...

I've now discovered that if I leave the server with the "Setup is starting Windows" message for about 30 minutes it finally loads and shows me the disk it can see. I can then create a partition on the disk, format it and copy the Windows setup files to it. But when the server reboots it will not boot from the disk. There does not appear to be any settings in the UEFI options to ...

Hi Nicola, as I see you have also some SAN-switches. And you zoned on host only to controller A and the other host only to B? Thats not the way you should do it. Do you have just on HBA in each server or two? On server has to see both controllers for the case of failover. In case you have one HBA in you server create a zoning which contails the server-hba and 1 port of ...

Dear Peter, unfortunately systems DS4700 and DS3400 not supported for SLES11 x64 yet. Use any supported versions from compatibility lists: TotalStorage Interoperability matrices http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/storage/product/int erop.html You can ask you local IBM representative about availability date. I have grieve You. Microsoft removed from Windows 2008 ntbackup utility and new backup software doesn’t support tape drives at all, only backup to hard drive. You have to use third party commercial solution to backup to tape under Windows 2008. There is a special version of ntbackup for 2008, but it works only in read-only more.
