African Cinema on DVD
Published (2008-11-15 05:01:00)
This article from Sight & Sound offers a decent overview of African cinema. Kino offers a fair amount of African films, out of the few Kino releases I've seen my favorite would be Daresalam which mixes politics with a coming-of-age story in Central Africa, and Genesis was a rather vivid retelling of the book of the bible depicting clan warfare in a historical sense. I also enjoyed Waiting for Happiness which currently has an...

Yes, I've seen Havetta's films, and they both are superb! However, their presentation in that 2-disc set is somewhat questionable. Let's see if a thread which keeps track of "of interest" blu-ray discs not available or announced in the US proves useful. I'll try to keep the list updated re your recommendations and emendations. Info of interest for those of us in the US will obviously include the region-coding, if any, and the availability of subtitles, so if you've got that info please pass it along. To start, then: ...

Similar to South America films, African Cinema interests me because of its differences from the Western world view. I have some of the New Yorker Ousmane Sembene DVD's as a starting point, but im sure there is a lot more to be discovered. can anyone suggest some of the best African film directors, and their related availability (or not) on dvd? thanks.

Not sure, but I'm curious as to how good the subtitles are on the Czech dvd. The version I saw last night (at the NJ Film Festival) showed the Zeitgeist logo at the beginning. There were a few moments on the film where the subtitles betrayed an unfamiliarity with the nuances of English grammar (perhaps due to sloppy editing), which makes me wonder if it's a pal-ntsc from the Czech version....

Have spent the weekend rewatching Smoking and No Smoking. I was interested by the way the film was structured as a technical exercise that helped to give what could be mundane situations extra resonance and poignancy of missed opportunities or alternative possibilities. I really need a flowchart to be completely clear about the various narrative branches (!) but I like the way that the ...

It's been two years since the screening of the restored print of "La cicatrice interieure" in Cannes and not even a discussion regarding an upcoming DVD release. Am I the only one interested in seeing it again together with "Les hautes solitudes" on an extra filled disc....? It's the the same call for infos as in the Eustache threat, any little news is welcome !

Does Hour of the Furnaces exist in it's full cut? I saw the first twenty minutes and was totally blown away. I'd love to see the whole thing. Question. Does this board extend to discussion of Cuban films? I think it's pretty much all one category... Anyway. I have seen a few Cuban films and think they are great, it is just such a shame that Cuba isn't very well represented ...

Hooray! I never thought this would happen, but apparently it's really coming . Although this is technically speaking a Delannoy film, he outdoes Cocteau (who of course wrote the script) in creating the looks of a Cocteau-film. A modernization of the Tristan & Iseult-legend, the film didn't fare well with the French because of what was perceived as 'Germanic' aesthetics at the time (mostly ...
