Ladies, who would you like to be...

This has been a tremendously entertaining experience, reading these posts. I've had a smile on my face the whole time, and frequently had to quit reading to gasp for breath I was laughing so hard. I have portraits of most of the "guys" hanging in my bedroom (the only room I'm allowed to have Civil War stuff displayed in, due to my family). I talk to them frequently (no, they don't talk back) -- I am constantly...

Quit hogging, Nathanb! You only get to pick one. Leave a few for the other ladies, although it looks like we might have a problem in deciding who gets JEB. Ole

The attractiveness of a beard -...

I disagree about the dermatitis. My husband has always had a beard (well, save for the few times during the summer over the years he's shaved it off and "started over"), and as far as I know, I've never gotten "brushburns." He keeps his nice and short, sort of like a two- or three-day length; I can tell when it's too long, because it pokes me in the nose when he kisses me! Johan, no offense...

Now ladies, please excuse the following crassness. If you are prudish or lack a sense of humor please do not read. Warning adult material follows. I was once told by a young and quite pleasent looking young woman that a woman only liked a beard if she enjoyed having her thighs tickled. I've had a beard at every opportunity ever since that comment.

Jackson? Saccharine? The mind boggles at the thought he was capable of such. Then again, making sense of Jackson as a human being dealing with other human beings is a task best saved for those able to avoid wondering if it would be simpler just to say he was crazy. As an officer, he was ice and iron. But man to man, or man to woman, he seems to have been...otherwise. And from what we know of his fondness for the little girls he did meet, he...

A nice beard on a man is always appreciated. No offense was taken here.

Depends on the guy, the style of beard, and how good he is about keeping food out of it. I will say there are few men who are NOT improved by a neat goatee. Beyond that, all the other factors begin to play in.

Gwyndara, If you can obtain a copy of thd July/Agust 2008 issue of Civil War Historian, there is an excellent article about Tea, and tea parties by Virginia Mescher. Apparently, a tea party could be anything from just tea, to an elaborate meal. Some of the foods she mentions are: Almond Sponge Cake Dried fruit hot cake and custard hoe cake johnny cake waffle cake dodger cake ...

Um. I will have to admit... I don't know who Daniel Ruggles is...although I am acquainted with Santa Claus... Well, *sigh*, Robert E. Lee is the one for me. The painting of him about the time he was graduated from the point sends Miss Markie into a swoon every time. And don't get me started on the Gallant Pelham. His photo graces every desk I work from: home, school, and my classroom. He...

I guess it all depends on how traditional (and extreme) you want to go. I have all kinds of recipes for everything it seems like. I bit of research showed me that they had the "basic" staples that we have now at Thanksgiving. The turkey, potatoes, corn (on or off the cob), cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, etc. At our Thanksgiving, we always have turkey and fried chicken, homemade noodles, ...
