Anything I post never agrees to your thinking or opinion. I clearly stated it was my opinion. To which I am entitled to it--be it if you feel I am wrong or am correct. And, you attack another's opinion but, take strong exception if yours is. I remain with my opinion, that at the time of Imboden's train moving from Gettysburg, I am not convinced Negro/Black wagoners were holding the reins, or involved in the "Wagoner's...

Quote: A. Wagoners fought the Yankees. (shot at them) B. There were black wagoners. C. There were black wagoners who shot at Yankees. This is not irrefutable logic -- close, but no cigar. If all wagoners were black, it could not be argued that blacks were not armed during the wagoners fight which, I think was the premise of the original post. I think most of us figured black wagoners fought because it is generally accepted that most wagoners...

Quote: I think that no Blacks volunteered or were shanghied into the fight. The fact that nobody, either residents of Williamsport or members of the ANV mentions the truly remarkable fact of armed Blacks in a slave state indicates to me that Imboden used only white wagoneers. From the first post on the thread - is this the point in dispute? Lee

You also have to consider the fact that when you are being shot at, the fight or flight syndrome is engaged. There may have been men, black and white, who simply picked up the first unattended weapon they saw to fight back rather than run. Fight or flight syndrome is the idea that the adrenalin rush will make you respond in one of two ways and all human do react in one of the two.

A well-reasoned, interesting hypothesis, prroh, but I find it unlikely that Imboden ...

One might also note the presence of Cooke's brigade (2,300 odd men at the end of June, I do not know as of October) plus a couple thousand men worth of (as of the end of June) other returning units with Lee and the absence of Pickett's division (I believe about 4,000 as of September) in the Richmond defenses, but that I think only leads to a small increase.
I believe part of Lee's advantage ...

The four shots fired in four different directions? Stuart was trying to draw a response from Yankee cavalry so as to determine their position. He was not sure where they were.

For what its worth, Early's division is ~5,400 men as of July 1-3, with Gordon's brigade about a third of that.
Such a force could, potentially, cause serious trouble - but it would be extremely vulnerable unless Lee could concentrate across the river faster than the Union could do something about that.
I am inclined to say Lee would have played it safe - but maybe if he could have ...

On another forum of which I'm a member, a poster asserted that the Pickett/Pettigrew charge was a failure largely because of the fences between the two forces. While I'm not convinced that there were still fences there by the 2nd day(wouldn't they have been cannibalized for firewood/breastworks?) I've not been able to find any info either pro or con. Anybody got any ideas on where to look?...
