I tend to believe the statement it included from a DF spokesman saying that it was to replace existing stocks. The Minister of Defence said the same on 19/11/09 in the Dáil Quote: Originally Posted by Willie O'Dea I can confirm that the purchase of this equipment was planned as a replacement programme due to fair wear and tear of equipment during normal training and is not related, as the Deputy asks, to any fears of civil disturbance in...

In that case the Army needs to fix itself and its systems. The point of a reserve is that they're to be used when the primary organisation is stretched. The equipment was bought to replace old stocks, kit gets damaged when used in multiple exercises. There was no secret conspiracy by Willie O' Dea or the Government to get ready for the Army to be called in. The simple fact is the Army isn't going to have to deal with any civil unrest. Things are never going to get so bad that Public Order platoons will be charging down O Connell Street. Anyone who thinks otherwise is off their head.

Its the civil Defenses job to provide support and extra units to the fire brigade in events like this. They wouldn't be as trained as the full time fire service but would take some of the pressure off of them.

Just goes to show how well they were made, a more modern fly by wire fighter might have crashed for that failure. An Israeli F-15 in the 80s lost an entire wing in a training dogfight due to an inflight collision with an A-4, the A-4 was destroyed but the F-15 made it back to base with a very high speed landing, touching down at around 220kts! compared to the standard 130kts. The F-15 ...
