Getting to grips with it, settings and updates, software installation etc. So early stages yet to tell if the choice was right. I don't play games on it so it should be fine. Just want to say thank you to all you helpful people out there. It's great to be a part of Boards.ie!! And I have decided to get the other Acer laptop fixed in the new year, swap with my mum whom i had already given my first and older laptop, but she is having...

you might try this program http://www.piriform.com/speccy from the makers of CCleaner it claims to tell you what kind of memory you have [edit] I've just tried it and although it correctly identifies SDRAM on my Dell c610, it doesnt go as far as telling me pc100 or pc133, or CL2/CL3 but it IS FREE beta software ..........

cheers bonzodog2. I think what I might do now is transfer all my information to an external HDD and free up as much of the C: drive as I can. Then I will go shopping for RAM. Again, any advice you have about purchasing and installing RAM, I would be delighted to hear it. I understand that there is a programmed from CRUCIAL.COM which will run a test, and that there is a maximum amount of RAM that I can install. In my case, I believe it is...

dell xp m1530 electric shocks?

I'd contact Dell straight away. It's only a mild tingling now, but it may become more serious later. As VC says, the age of the laptop may become a factor in how Dell treat your request initially. Personally I'd treat it as a fault. One of my rules for appliances is that the electricity stays inside the box.

Buying Macbook pro in the US

You will have to declare that going back into the country, under irish law. And the tax you pay will be pretty steep. Not enough to really justify getting it afaik. Power supplies are dual voltage so that isnt a problem. However I note that my HP laptop supply - while the Brick is Dual Voltage, the cord is not. Which is only rated for 120v. That might have something to do with why im on my 3rd charger. For the extra 5 euro though just buy a UK...

you have made some good points here T.firmer yes if i had 2500 euros i would not spent that on sxps 1640 with 4670, but also basic 1640 with 4670 is not 2500E i have just checked and it basic cost 958E included vat and post. also yes you are right about NBC rating and reviews , but there forums are good for help. xps 16 is good to buy if it is secondhand and reasonable specs and price tag on it

I think you will struggle to get that spec under 500 unless you pick up a refurb. I went into Dabs & specified laptops with 4GB RAM, 16in+ screen, 500GB HD etc & the cheapest is 662. Can't personally vouch for it but the HP DV7 I heard is a decent machine & it certainly looks good.

You can get some very good deals on Vista Laptops right now, with much better specs than Windows 7 laptops that can be 150 euro more expensive. They all come with free upgrades to Windows 7 too so you can be laughing!

Most likely the screen resolution of the new machine is just lower.
Go to System Information > Display and it should tell you the actual resolution of the display.

Keyboard will be US layout, but you can change that in software settings yourself.
The biggest issue is that you may have to pay VAT and Import Duty payable on the Macbook which means you wouldn't make much of a saving at all.

I would go for the larger laptop. If your dad isn't that familiar with computers and uses a hunt and peck typing style, then you don't want to be messing about with a reduced size keyboard. A larger screen size is always useful and if this isn't going to be used on the move a lot then the biggest benefit of a netbook -- its ultra-portability is lost.
As for recommendations, a basic spec laptop...

What laptop is it? Are you blocking the vents when you use it? Are you gaming on it or something?

I'd want to know where the came from and who refurbished them. The likes of Dell Outlet machines are classed as "refurbished", but are practically new, but others i wouldn't be so sure of.
What's your budget?

make sure your wifi on laptop is turned on, some laptops have a physical switch on the front or side
scan for wifi access points on the computer, see if you're picking up any wifi access points
if you can see your access point but it won't connect, turning the access point off and on sometimes helps
