Doing an awkward room on the cheap
Published (2009-11-05 12:34:00)
No worries. Yes the amp is a bit of a long story. I bought it principally for playing my music on, with the possibility of one day using it for home cinema. It was also a bit of an impulse buy - I was in Peats and explained the above requirement, the sales guy was a bit snooty i.e. "well this would do but you obviously can't afford it" was the impression so I more or less bought it out of perversity. Dumb I know. So it...

Re-post re QED Transmatch
Published (2009-11-10 19:00:00)
a = yes b = yes c = yes...maybe. The sonus has a total powerr output of 2x55W into 8 ohms so there would probably be enough volume for some background music with all pairs on, but don't expect to be able to support a party in each room. When you wire speakers in paralel, which is what the QED does, you decrease the resistance with each pair you switch in. So, if all your speakers have 8 ohms resistance, the amplifier section of the Sonus...

Many thanks folks for taking the time to reply. Marantz it is so! Have always liked Marantz products so all I have to do now is to convince the financial controller to replace the recently acquired Sony amp with the Marantz one. Many thanks again

The nanny state in the UK doesn't like banana plug because they believe people will plug them into a mains sockets!
For this reason, amplifiers have banana sockets bunged up, usually with bit of removeable plastic. Don't know about the Marantz but with my yammy I had to insert a wood screw into the post, give it a half turn to get some grip and yank the bung out.

The operating manual tells you what to do: see p. 3. You need to get a pair of RCA to XLR leads made up with XLR pins 1 and 3 connected to the ground connection of the RCA plug.

Provided the two wires coming from each connector indicate that one wire is different to the other - one is normally marked with a stripe of some kind, then you can connect the speakers up the same way - i.e. the stripe wire to the black speaker connection on the amp in all cases. To be honest, as long as there are two wires available after you've cut off the connector, you can connect them up, ...
