Consumer confidence has apparently picked up since the Budget, most likely because people now know exactly what they're going to be hit with in the New Year in terms of earnings loss etc. Whether this is a temporary surge or the beginning of a sustained recovery (or even a sustained improvement over 2009 numbers) remains to be seen.

Not the best paper I've ever read. Very narrow analysis over a very shallow time period and full of evocative, bolded text. Why also are they attacking minimum wage as a failure of equality? I would not have thought that min wage was a tool designed to create wage equality, but rather to ensure a minimum standard of living. The technical notes are a laugh as well.

its a pretty good contrary indicator. Jeff Bezos made the cover in 1999 - the year the internet portion of the tech stock bubble topped out. GW Bush made the cover as his popularity rating had just begun to slide, ending at the worst such rating since Nixon, concurrent with a stock market crash. Hitler made the cover in 1938. General Chiang Kai Chek in 1937. It turned out to be an ill omen, career-wise. Stalin made the cover in 1939 and again...
