Great DIY. For those who want Cooling System info on 1998 528i 5-sp , it is here (there is some overlap with later models such as 2002 525i): www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/199986

HIDs draw a lot of current to start, but once they've ignited it subsides. I'm not electrical-savvy enough to know how to fix this, but I'm sure there's something that can be done. Brownouts are bad for computers; I lost 3 hard drives (under warranty) in 2 months going from school to home (home in the country, where voltage ranges between 80 and 135V). Different kind of system but the the operation is still 12V.

It's on my list! Tranny mounts too! I will probably order them next week. PS- I also noticed that in JackCat's replacement, the intake manifold was covered in sand. Mine also gets caked with sand too! Why? Thanks! Jason

528i Vanos Repair - Questions

This is a relatively easy DIY. We did mine and Chris Lovell's over the last three weeks. It is intimidating but not that hard. The Beisan procedure is as well written as it gets. The degree of difficulty is about a 4-5 on a scale of 1-10. I just did my CCV and that was an 7-8. A major PITA. If you've replaced brake pads, you can do replace your seals. Hardest part was removing and reinstalling the fan blade. More importantly, the...

Engine will not start on 1st try

Does the engine spin over when the clutch is not depressed? There is a lockout sensor on the pedal linkage to prevent the starter motor from spinning with the clutch out. Does it do this when cold, or all the time? How do you know you have no spark?

Think about getting an e39 M5; I know I have been.... Prices for earlier ( 2000-2001) models have plummeted in the last year.

I am far from an expert. This is what I have decided is the problem with the valve cover gaskets failing so fast.
I noticed when I removed mine and replaced them that the paint that they used for the cover was used inside and outside. The paint was flaking everywhere. When I removed the gaskets from the grooves the paint was flaking out of there too. I sandblasted mine to get all of the ...

I did it myself. I believe this was my first DIY so it was kindda hard but all in all it's only bolts you need to deal with. It think it was harder to take the back-ups and o-rings out of the cylinders than to get to them. You may want to look at your valve cover gasket and spark plugs.
One thing that I found out was that when you disconnect the hoses from the expansion tank, coolant will get ...

- Lighting Module. It can be fixed for $10:

- Oil Valve Cover + CCV = $1290. I think you got robbed big time.
- Oil Valve Cover is a very easy job.
- The CCV is a complex issue. At that mileage 100K, I had alot of cracked vacuum hoses, Intake Seals. A good mechanic would address ALL of the issues that I outlined in my DIY:...

Are you on a level ground?
Personally I'd not worry, the mfg oil capacity usually gives the owners the oil level at the lower end near the MIN mark.
If you want to sleep better, then add 0.5 qts.
I usually use 7.5 to 8 qts in my I6.
