How much saw is enough
Published (2008-11-27 16:53:00)
As a kid, I watched my father run a chainsaw and to me, at 8 years old, he looked like he knew what he was doing. Then my grandfather came over one time when he was running the saw and was disgusted at what he saw. My dad was an office guy and didn't have too much skill outdoors and grandpa was a laborer and outdoorsman. He immediately took the saw and replaced the chain with a new/new sharpened one and WOW did that baby cut. What...

More info for both responders. I am a fanatic about sharp chains, I hand file 5 or 6 times and then use a machine to get them back to true. I do not cut dirty stuff unless I have to. With a 24 inch bar fully in white or red oak it is about as much as the saw wants to pull(non skip chain). I have been doing this for 27 years so I am not exactly a raw beginner. I have cut lots of wood with the 036 and yes it will dissect a 60 inch oak but it...

its usually diseases and bug attacks that cause trees to die out, then there is the obvious age. i would say that the lightning wound has done a number on it and its rotting in the middle cutting off the upper branches, your good to cut it down or else it looks like its going to fall very soon.

I live in south central Michigan and heat exclusively with wood. I have been doing so for 27 years and burn anywhere from 5 to 12 full cords a year. It is mostly White Oak, Red Oak , Hickory and Cherry. I scrounge all of my wood which is getting more and more difficult what with the robust Michigan economy. Used to be I could get all the tops and limb wood that I wanted thus my saw selection...

Like oak tree of the other poster (solvent), the large oak in my front yard has contracted armillaria. My arborist has recommended removal. I asked about removing soil around the roots adjacent to the trunk to assess the extent of the damage, but he believes that since armillaria is terminal, any treatment would be futile. I will be seeking a second opinion from another local arborist, but...

we have a couple door yard maples that have been on our front lawn for years-before my dad was born and he's 50... The first week of october-leaves fell early here-the other trees in the yard lost their leaves except for this one. It kept 65% or so of it leaves. Leaves turned a dark brown-the color they get when pulled from a branch when they are still green. The tree had been hit by ...

What zone are you in? The information I am seeing says they can winter over in the ground as low as Zone 8; if in a colder area the corms should be lifted and stored. If you are in a hardier zone with just a bit of frost and these are perennials which in their native habitat would stay green year round, then I would leave the green leaves and only trim off the dead. However, I will keep ...
