You can use Amanda to backup nearline storage from disks to tape. But, restoration using dcm4chee will require two steps. Use Amanda to restore from tape to disk and then dcm4chee can get the necessary files. Paddy

I am wondering if one can safely point two separate amanda servers at the same client--they would be backing up completely different (mutually exclusive) DLEs, but may run concurrently. I saw in another post that one can run two clients processes against the SAME server by adding a new IP address to the client[1] , but I am worried that if I run two separate servers, they might fight over common files (e.g., amandates). Has anyone successfully...

I can't say whether anyone has done that before. However, it would seem that if you can run 2 clients on the same machine (as in the wiki entry you cited), and have them respond separately and not conflict, then it shouldn't make any difference whether you are calling them from one backup server or two backup servers. As long as you are breaking down the DLE's and splitting them between the two servers, then any entries in the...

Amanda can work with MSL2024 tape library. Amanda will use mtx and mtx supports MSL2024 ( http://mtx.opensource-sw.net/detail.php?record=188 ).
How are you using DCM4CHEE? Are you planning to move medical images files from DICOM storage to the tape library?

thanks

Hello,
I work at Zmanda in professional services, and have implemented Amanda in many environments which contain both large amounts of data(40Tb) and large number of files(recently worked on a dataset that had 46 million files). I can say from my experience that Amanda, with proper backup planning, can handle these large amounts of data and files. As far as using the multiple tape drives ...

How about swapping the disks so you have your original disk in the replacement Dell?

I would do something like this:
boot the machine to restore from a Linux rescue DVD. Partition the disk and mkfs (and mkswap) the various partitions. Enable networking on the machine to recover.
On the amanda server, restore all needed filesystems to your /holding disk (if there's enough space, otherwise start with the root filesystem and restore the rest later)
Then, on the ...

Actually my question shouldn't have been about how to combine virtual and physical tapes with amanda, but how to combine arranging backups using disk and tape. I will work this out using rsnapshot (or similar tools) for backups to disk and Amanda for backups to tape.
Ofcourse I would appreciate alternative options by any of you.
