M-1 Rifle From Private Party

Dhas, to tell you what a deal that is, I just bought an M1 from the son of a fellow that recently passed on. I happily paid 800 for that one. Granted it has a receiver made by International Harvester (I. H. made the fewest M1's) and I still have work to do on it like replace the barrel and the trigger group to make it correct for the period and to make it correct for the manufacturer.

We have sort of "settled" on a price of $250 for the rifle. He says he has a small box stuff that he thinks goes with it. More info to follow.

Wow, for a rifle I have wanted since I was 6 that is a screaming deal. Inspirational, now I need to find someone who inherited a rifle they don't want and duplicate it oh and a Smith and Wesson .44 Magnum 4" that they found in a box after grampa passed and who can even shoot such a beast.... I have a vivid imagination.

I addition to what Constable said, I think a lightweight 16" or pencil barrel 16" would be the way to go. Here is a lightweight from J&T: http://jtdistributing.net/store/more_k_lwt.html Or something like this from Bushmaster: http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_xm15_BCWA3F16SL.asp

I am pretty much a Giant (38" sleeves) I do not shoot shorty's well. I personally would opt for a standard A2.

I imagine they are lighter, and probably balance better, with the COG closer to the receiver, and thus closer to your father's body. That seems like it
would be easier to hold up with one hand.
Also, I prefer the shorter barrel for use at close and medium ranges. If I need to reach out further, I would prefer an MBR-style rifle (FAL, Garand, etc.)
over a standard 20" AR-15, anyway.

A 10-22 should be able to get far better than 6 inch groups, at 50 yds, which is about the max for sighting in. And yes, you need still winds for sighting in.
Wind doping comes later. Consider the type of ammo you are using as well. At 50 yds, target ammo, will shoot adequately well, to fine tune, but most ammo for
.22 is very poor for accuracy, and especially consistency. Increasing range to 100...

$799 would be high for either a carbine or Garand that would have been well thrashed. Having said this, though...the better grade examples of either can
easily go MUCH higher.
Even today, I'd have to struggle to justify much more than $600 for a shooter of either variety... and it would need to be a rather good one...strong
barrel, reasonably "correct", and free of significant damage. I ...

I would REALLY like to add the third one down to my collection. I have
always wanted an AK with a slant brake and a bayonet. I wonder how these
are. It looks like there are no magwell dimples so they are probably WASRs,
but they could be decent depending on who brought them in. Porter

Of those choices, I'd be inclined to pick the HiPoint carbine, provided:
A) You're satisfied with its reliability.
B) You have a decent handful of mags.
C) You have a decent mix of ammo loaded in said mags.
However, in my opinion, one's choice should reflect their environment... what is "best" in an urban/ suburban enviroment may be a less than
optimal choice for a more rural ...

Since you already have a carbine, and in a more suitable caliber, I'd get rid of the shorty Enfield and get a full length rifle for distance. Maybe even a
SMLE or No. 4, if you have .303 stocked up.
