There's a lot to hate about Peter Mandelson's controversial Digital Economy Bill, but there's one provision that perfectly captures the absolute, reality-denying absurdity of the whole enterprise. That titbit is the provision that holds the Bill's most drastic measures in reserve, only to be used if Britain's illegal filesharing doesn't drop off by 70% within a year of the main part of the Bill coming into force....

Its a threat to national security, because if the people were aware of what was negotiated it would lead to an immediate, and violet riot against the government by its own people.

The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Victoria Espinels nomination Thursday, paving the way for a full Senate vote to confirm the nations first copyright czar. No Senate vote date was set immediately for a nominee who was applauded by both the copyleft and the copyright. Espinel is expected to have a key role for the United States as it and several other countries secretly negotiate an intellectual property treaty,...

A lot of anti-depressant medications require that you wean off them slowly, which is why you probably reacted with "HORRIBLE dizzy flashes" when you ran out. I know because I was on them too, once upon a time. I would get mild to heavy anxiety attacks if I forgot my medication. I had mild depression compared to what my close friend had though. Yes, I could work and function as normally as anyone else. I never missed a days work...

I would love to see this challenged in court. Not letting citizens view the record of the law upon request is CLEARLY a due process violation (ignorance may be no excuse, but one has to have accesses to the law in order to reasonably follow it). Since legal philosophy [at least in America] is predicated on laws being made by society for purposes of stability, rights protection, and collective action any attempt to hide the law from the...

It's stupid to miss work from chronic depression, but if it was validated as a reason to collect insurance money, then I guess some one feels it's legit enough. What is then stupid about this is that anyone who has chronic depression can still have a good time and capture moments of that with a camera. Just because she cracked a smile while trying to cheer herself up doesn't mean she's out...

The OECD has released new data on its global counterfeiting estimates, concluding that the share of counterfeit and pirated goods in world trade is estimated to have increased from 1.85% in 2000 to 1.95% in 2007. That represents an increase to $250 billion worldwide. That is obviously a big number, but notably far lower than the claims from ACTA supporters. Copyright lobby groups have long ...

If you dont back a copyright treaty being negotiated in secret, you must want to destroy Hollywood, its blockbuster movies and all the jobs they create.
At least thats the message from the Motion Picture Association of America.
Its spelled out in a Thursday memo to the Senate Judiciary Committee, urging lawmakers to support the Obama administrations efforts toward negotiating an ...

A health insurer lost 1.5 million patient records last May but waited six months to disclose the incident.
The data, which was stored on a portable disk drive that disappeared from the insurers office, was unencrypted and included patient Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and health data, according to the Hartford Courant. The disk also contained personal information on at least...

This Hitler quote stolen from the comments says it all.
“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.”
