Yoel Hi... I'll let you in a great secret..... Whenever that happens to me, I comfort myself by saying that my senility began at the age of 14. There is thus no reason at all for me to worry at this time of my life. Best Rogov

FYI: This wine cannot be ordered over the phone or online, you have to be in the tasting room to buy it.

Hi Daniel, My question did not relate to the rude behaviour of the wine shop owner. This is already established. The question I was asking was "does the shop owner have the right by law to instruct a normally behaving customer to leave his shop". ie a question of legality and not of decent behaviour. I remember a similar case many years ago that went to court and the judge ruled in favour of the customer. The explanation was...

TNR - Bartenura Moscato

Thanks Rogov - that was my original intent. However, as the wine is being contributed I am subject to some "restrictions" and will be comparing it with the Carmel LH Gewurtz and the Herzog LH Chenin Blanc (not a perfect comparison but nontheless...)

2004 Carmel Limited Edition. Opened the bottle 4 hours in advance, but wine felt like a decanting could help. Indeed after one hour the wine was great and continued to develop nicely in the glass. Therefore, I'll wait at least 6 months before "revisiting". A great wine.

WS tastes wines from Flam,...

The December 15th issue of the Wine Spectator has an Israeli wine tasting notes in the back, no article. They give Flam and Pelter some OK scores but absolutely crush Tzora Judean Hills wine, which is better than a paltry 82. The Fam's tasted were the 2006 Superiore (scored a 88), Daniel scored that one a 91. The notes do not even come close with WS calling it a red wine, while Daniel's notes show black flavors. The next was the 2006...

I think you are perfectly normal for not always buying, but often looking. It is good to know what's new, what's old, and what's on sale, or simply what the standard price of wine is at the time. I used to feel self-conscious about not buying at Derech Hayayin in Tel Aviv, mainly because the staff was so friendly and always offered me things to taste, of which, I rarely made a purchase. Now that I know some of the people better,...

Hi Daniel, I rely to a certain extent on the score, but pay special attention to the qualitative description offered by the critic. So really its a combination of score and verbal justification of the score. Of course another very important aspect is to see if you can "calibrate your palate ' if only partially to that of the critic.ie agreement with the qualitative description of the wine. You ...

Robbie, Hi.... Following is my most recent tasting note for the 1993 Katzrin, that taken from the 2010 edition of my book. Best Rogov Golan Heights Winery Katzrin, 1993: Deep, broad, long and complex, this full-bodied Cab-ernet-Merlot blend continues to live up to its promise. Abundant tan-nins are well balanced by wood and fruits that include cassis, black cherries and orange peel, along with...

Speaking as a customer, if I received an offer at a good price, and the cork issue was disclosed up front, I would buy a few bottles. 'Tis easy enough to pour the wine through a small mesh to get rid of cork fragments before serving. If the problem is not disclosed to the buyer, and you are ITB and buying to re-sell, depends very much on the pricing and the willingness of the producer to provide...

Isi, Hi..... I have tasted this wine twice and on both occasions have noticed the staining on the top of the cork (much as shown in your photograph). In neither case did I see any sign of seepage (if I had, I would have returned the bottles). Such a staining can occur during bottling (if the bottle has been a bit overfilled or if the cork was inserted too rapidly) but in either of those cases ...

Alex, Hi..... The 2006 Reserve had not yet been released when the book went to press. I have, however, tasted it since and my tasting note follows. Best Rogov Yiftah'el, Petite Sirah, Limited Reserve, 2006: Developed in barriques for 12 months, ruby towards garnet in color, medium bodied, with soft tannins and showing appealing plum, cherry and cassis fruits, those supported by light spicy ...

Michael, Hi…. Following are my latest tasting notes for the 2004 and 2005 wines in question, both tasted in February-March 2009. As should be expected in that period of time, not many changes at all between tastings. As to the 2005 in magnum bottles, 2018; in double magnum, 2020. Possibly longer in both cases but those should be good guidelines as estimates/guesses. Best Rogov Hagafen, Prix ...

Maybe, if Israeli winemakers want to be dominated by one style or grape, like Argentinean Malbec or NZ Sauv Blanc.

Daniel I thank you for that post and couldnt agree more. Additionally if I may add, everyone's appreciation of wine needs to start somewhere. There are many people I know who are way past white zin but were it not for white zin they would probably ...

Tell your friend the truth. Give him the chance to return the wines to the shop. This happens too often that shops pushes out their unsold stock to people who trust their advices .... What is the name of the shop ?

Think of it in terms of business. If a winery isn't regularly releasing large formats, it doesn't pay to bottle magnums and wait for people to request them. Unless the wine is already a year to a few years old, it should be fine to rebottle wine from standard bottles in a large format without any effect on aging potential. We generally fill large and small formats only by special request at ...

David, Hi.... Allow me to disagree with the comment about not tasting or evaluating wines from areas with which the critic is not familiar. All wines, no matter from where they come, must meet certain standards - those to at least some extent of typicity and most surely of balance and structure. A single example will suffice: an oak-aged varietal Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux blend based ...
