Infection of atapi .sys file has been the most common redirection cause lately, but some other files may be involved as well. If you're not 100% sure, your computer is perfectly clean, you can always post at Malware and Virus Removal section.

which anti-virus is best to use?...

I stopped using nortons products when symantec took over and they ******* up a good company. That said, in 2008, consumer reports rated their security suite as the "least intrusive" of the major firewall/virus products. Although not cheap, the license is for three computers, so spreading the cost across my three machines and the price becomes quite reasonable. Performance tests clearly prove to me that it's not...

Is Google infected?
Published (2009-12-21 14:49:00)
After seeing so many threads about Google redirection I just have to ask, Is Google infected? Not intending to throw fear into anyone, but the assumption is clearly there. I see no other search providers having redirection problems (yet) . At the same time I think if Google was indeed infected, word about it would be all over the net. So what is this, an infection solely aimed at Google through many users pc's? Another search provider...

Robertpri, does your son have any weird security event logs since this virus happened? As I posted in Multiple security events..advapi logon process...my computer secure? after this exact same virus I now see a bunch of odd security logs, so although sysguard is gone from the registry, etc...I'm wondering if it didn't change some local or group policy settings that may need to be adjusted back as well. This is one nasty...

As broni explained. At least 80% of people use Google to search, so why target anything else? That's the same reason you see so many Malware targeting Windows... it's the size that matters

Young and older alike are doing it. The source code to most all malware is freely available and can be downloaded and modified to create new variants of malware. As well, known Windows holes are documented and the exploitation methods are published at "black hat" security sites. In some ways, the young folks engaging in this are similar to the young high school athelete who dreams of pro sports. Often the writer of major...

Shrink, in a perfect world - possible but, improbable. My brother suggested to me some years ago that viruses were designed by the guys who run businesses cleaning infected computers. Something to ponder on, as who else would benefit from a virus?
Meantime, would you spend hours of your time designing a computer program for everyone to use FREE?
Happy New Year. Neil.

I have been using Avast Antivirus (free edition ) for about two years now, and I update once a month.
It has always been about 1 to 2mb of data to update the virus database.
Today, Monday, December 28 2009, I decide to update and Avast wants to download 32mb (thirty two megabytes) of data onto my computer.
No, I did not select to upgrade to premium, or upgrade to a new version!...

No, Google is not infected.
Bad guys always have in mind most popular targets.
That's why, there is more Windows viruses, than Mac viruses, more viruses targeting IE, or Firefox, than Opera, or Safari and so on....
There may be very different kind of infections causing search engine redirections.
Some time ago, the most popular one was DNS changer/ DNS hijacker.
Little bit later, bad ...

I've had the Google redirect problem for the last two days. I ran Spybot, Ad -Aware, Malwarebytes, and Gmer. Only Gmer reported a suspicious atapi .sys file in c:\windows\system32\drivers. The other programs found nothing that would solve this problem.
Here's what I did:
From another networked computer (that has no problems), I went to DOS and changed to the c:\...
