weary, your endeaver was much loftier than mine {the expereince you provided your grandson} but as far as the shooting you did, its been my expereince that looking back over any shoot, there is always something you miss after you get time to think back. there is always that "ohh i should have...." its the nature of the beast i guess.. you did hit the nail on the head though, and this is where i'll be concerned with is...

Not many people carry Traveler's Checks these days, tho I certainly did in years past. Note for those rellying on bank cards and ATM's: In many cases, especially at major supermarkets, you have the option of getting "cash back" after a purchase, and in doing so, in many cases you can save money spent on bank/ATM fees. Anytime you have the option of getting "cash back", you might want to do so,...

Sorry, I meant 10 days ahead of you on Katahdin, but I guess I was 10 days earlier than you on Springer too. It would be interesting to see how close we came to running into each other. Matt Abbotts www.ASuperiorAdventure.com

I carried about $200 cash, and had to get more from an ATM only once, so I didn't use much cash. (My whole hike cost $3500 including gear and travel.) I noticed that I had to use more cash in NJ and NY, where, for some reason, quite a few small businesses did not accept credit cards. Once I got a great deal on a motel room, $50 cash for a $100 room in MA, because a lightning storm took out their credit card machine and I had cash handy.

$200 is a good amount of cash to carry and would get you through a bad situation like a town stop where cash isn't available and the place you're staying doesn't take credit cards. Besides spending cash directly, there are other situations where you might need it, say if you're splitting a hotel room and one person charges it and the others give him or her cash for share. You could actually get cash in that scenario and you...

You might wanna run your list by Jester2000 who posts here. He recently hiked the PCT plus he runs an Outfitter shop so I'll bet he has all sorts of ideas for you.

Depends entirely where I'm hiking generally. I'm often happy with $50 -
$100 cash for most trips. Along the AT, if a lot of small stores are in the
plan, that may increase to $200. With the availability of ATM's, it's been
my experience that cash is pretty close-by. I like to have two sources, too
many times my ATM card's magnetic strip gets too abused and it won't always
work. I like to have a ...

I say ditch the idea of getting the down pants. You'll be fine. Heck, just jump in your sleeping bag when it gets really cold.

Bring a big SD card, and take lots of pictures. In addition to the views, take pictures of people you meet along the way.

I would have much preferred SOBO. The descent into Kinsman Notch torched my quads, which led to knee pain later in the hike. While the descent to Glenncliff is a lot longer, it's not nearly as steep.
In addition, if it's wet, then I'd much rather be climbing those rock faces and steps than trying to descend.

I have seen people leave the Trail every year because of an insufficiency of funds and it's always sad.
Or as an alternative, I've seen people fall weeks behind their Trailfriends because they needed to take time off and work for awhile.
And lastly, every year there are folks who attempt to finish the Trail on virtually no money......the eat horribly, they live out of hiker boxes on ...

Keep in mind that splitting motel rooms can be just as cheap or cheaper that staying at hostels.
A good example is Neels Gap - the hostel costs $17 and you are in a bunkroom, where you can walk 0.2 mile and stay at Blood Mtn Cabins with two other hikers for about the same cost, and you would have a small house to yourself, with a fireplace!
There are much more hiker facilities in the ...
