It is too late to win their hearts and minds. That was an extremly small window of opportunity. Best to initiate a war with everything you have and get it over quickly. The longer it lasts the harder it is to win over the civilians.

I think the ending of the Cold War is going to continue to be debated by historians for decades. It would be nice if partisan ideology wasn't brought into it as much though.
