Mixed Access to a Router
Published (2009-12-14 15:42:00)
Yes. Do take the time to read through some of the articles at PracticallyNetworked.com. When you use a wireless router, it's a good idea to secure it with some form of encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc. The router comes with this capability, you just need to set it up. The CD that came with the router may even help you do this. If not, the users manual will tell you how.

Hello Z, Thanks once again. I should be trying it sometime over the next few days and will revert to your expertise should I encounter problems (as surely I will!). Regards, Norman

XP Wireless Network Nightmare
Published (2009-12-08 02:21:00)
Hi all. I'm using a desktop XP PC that accesses the internet wirelessly, this machine is attached to a network printer, also wireless. The name of the workgroup for this PC is MSHOME and its name on the Network is DESKTOP. In addition, I have networked a VISTA laptop which works perfectly, prints, talks to the Desktop etc; the Laptop is called THE MAPLES (the name of my house). I am now trying to add my daughters' XP netbooks to the...

Hi WTT, I don't know how to troubleshoot my wireless connection. I have a d-link wbr2310 and my wireless drops out at least once a day. I have one laptop running XP and one running vista, both have the connection problem. Things work fine on boot up. I have excellent signal for a while and then suddenly - connection lost. My desktop is wired to the router and that connection continues to work when the wireless stops. All I can do is...

Hello. I'm using windows XP, on a slightly ancient computer, routing wireless with a D-Link Air DWL-122 USB device. About a week ago, the home modem (which my computer, obviously, is not attached to via Ethernet) completely died. A new one was sent and installed last night. I put in all the correct codes and such, and I should be able to get near-flawless wireless connection, as I was able to with the old modem. Same router, by the way....

No Local Area Connection
Published (2009-12-15 09:09:00)
As Doug and Rich pointed out, in my past experiance of working on pc's in the last 2 years hibernation and sleep mode imo is not the way to go. Many times most hardware does not resond to well when trying to wake it up or most time you end up booting the machine or it locks up or sometime the hardware does not respond, Acers and Dells are the ones I seen to have hissy fists. The thing I do is just using the screen saver, thats the better...

Hi scudo. Try bypassing the router and connect directly to the broadband modem. If the problem no longer occurs then I would suggest a new router.

You need to install the drivers for your system, the LAN in your list in device manager is why your not able to use it, all those marks mean the drivers for those components are required before they will work, this is standard after a reinstall, so go to the board makers site, and download\install ALL the drivers for your board, start with installing the chipset, then video (your video ...

Hi mistilee, welcome to WhatTheTech. How did you reformat and reinstall your system (is it XP Home or Pro or Vista)? Did you get any CD discs with your computer? If not, what is the make and model number? You can get the necessary drivers from the manufacturers web site. If you look at Device Manager (Click on Start then Run , type devmgmt.msc and press Enter ) you will see...

This is almost sure to be hardware. Bad CAT5 Ethernet cable(s), defective network card/chipset, defective broadband modem or router. Could also be caused by the wire connecting your home to the local network, either cable or DSL. I'd start by having your ISP run a line test to see what the quality is.
