James, Very nice! On my monitor, I almost don't see the stems, so perhaps you could go a touch lighter on them. It is quite probable that they are a bit more visible in real life. Regardless, those petals just pop out from the dark background! Don

Hi and Welcome to the Pastel forum! Nice work! I like the wet reflections in the first one and the title is perfect. Nice moody feeling in the second!

Ida--WOW! Okay, this is THE best thing I've seen from you, hands down. I think the combo of the sky, tree and mountain is by far the strongest dynamic there. I love the distillation of those shapes. VERY effective and interesting work. If this was my piece, I'd nix the middle building and the wimpy bush on the bottom below it, and break up that fence line. That would open up the piece so we could travel right out to that mountain....

Derek, these are wonderful - very different from each other. The second one looks like it has some watercolor work in it? My fav is the first - those blue trees are outstanding!

Welcome! How nice to have a newbie drop in. Please tell us a little bit about your paintings. For example, the paper that you used, how large your paintings are and which pastels you used. If you would like comments, just put "C & C welcome" in your thread and some of the most knowledgeable, kind and generous pastelists will help you out. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I decided to jump in with 100 portraits after a painting I had done a few years ago. The first eight are on a warm gray Strathmore paper and the last one is a white sheet from a canson pad. All the approaches vary and I tried to use different color combinations than what I would normally use. Another goal in this first set was to limit the number of pastels to 4-7 colors and a completion time of ...

You do many more still lifes than I do Celeste so I hope you don't mind a few questions. Do you try to position your objects so that none are equally distant from the edge? Does that even matter? Does something like your candle holder have to connect with the other things - maybe by just a shadow - or can it exist on its own? I get stumped before I ever begin because I don't know how to ...
