Ear pain related to canker sore?...
Published (2009-12-17 23:58:14)
Replying to: Ear pain related to canker sore? No, you did not likely damage your ear, but pain in the mouth/tongue can cause pain to be neurologically referred to the ears (due to nerve pathways). Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) can also cause tenderness and swelling in the lymph nodes, and this can cause referred ear pain as well. I can't examine your ear to be sure, but I suspect your ear is just feeling the pain originating in your...

Replying to: EARS & MUCUS Hi Just another medical question Well, I did ask ENT if the mucus is clogging the eustachian tubes-he said "No" I still feel that is possible? Also, if all ear tests came back normal, is it stll possible that eustachian tubes could not be working properly because of GERD-LPR? and If my throat is healed at 90%, is is possible once it is 100%, everything will return to normal? Thank you and sorry to...

Replying to: PRESSURE AND FULLNESS IN EARS went to the otologist-he recommended a low salt diet and said he is not sure if it is menieres-he said it could be hydross (not sure of spelling-please inform me of correct spelling) which is water behind the ear but he said he would not recommend a diuretic at this time. He said this could clear, it could take years to do so, some never clear-some people he said just learn to live with it. I asked...

Replying to: Ears plugged, ringing, wind noise Thank you. I mentioned before that my doctor told me to get an MRI. I have had problems with my health insurance, but I am finally able to schedule it. I have a question, though. Should I be worried about the MRI exacerbating my tinnitus? I have had one before, and they are pretty loud. Also, in the past few days, in addition to my plugged feeling and tinnitus, I feel like I have been getting a...

Replying to: aching ear Saw the NP this am, she ordered an stat MRI, had to go there right away, and then come back to her office for results. They were normal, so she said to just start the PT on monday and take Aleve for the pain, the PT should help. My blood pressure was 120/88 today. I am not sure if the PT is a fix or not, she said my ear looked fine, something about light shining good?

Replying to: Loss of Voice After doing some research online, I very strongly believe that my voice loss has been caused by acid reflux. Is there anything that a doctor could do besides prescribe me a prescription medicine for the acid reflux? I am going to try taking Prevacid, which I'm hoping will have more of an effect than Pepcid, which I take now on occasion.

Phlegm - Ear, Nose & Throat:...
Published (2009-12-12 00:00:00)
My husband was told by a doctor that he should cough or hock up any phlegm that is in his throat so as not to cause a sore throat. When he gets sick, however, he does nothing but hock stuff up and spit it out, and then still complains that his throat is sore. I think all of this is doing way more damage than good. I can't see how hocking stuff up wouldn't make your throat sore. Any advice?

Replying to: Tonsil Problems None of the strep tests I took ever came up positive and they've tested every time. They basically always just treated as if it was strep or called it tonisilitis.

Published (2009-12-13 00:00:00)
Replying to: Loss of Voice You're welcome, sprinkles. Given your strong history of AR and nightime and vocal symptoms, the scope procedure might give you peace-of-mind if you're anxious about this. It gave me great comfort to have the ENT actually put "eyes on" my throat and vocal cord area. And if you do the scope procedure, just stay calm and you'll do fine. Do you know there are people who can tolerate being scoped...

Self-diagnosis. Self-treatment with someone else's medication. Those things make me very uncomfortable. Insurance or not, this is really not a safe practice. Those medications, like many other antibiotics, can be used for sinusitis.

Before you discuss management, you need to be properly examined and diagnosed. Management depends on your diagnosis and post nasal drainage is NOT a diagnosis; it is a symptom. It is the CAUSE of the postnasal drainage that is essential. It could be chronic sinusitis....allergies....just to name two. See your primary care provider or an ENT. You may need...

No, it would not be likely that a pediatrician would drain her sinuses in the office. Even ENTs try and avoid that procedure. If you have the opportunity to see and ENT that would be great. Has she had any imaging studies? It sounds like she needs a CT scan of her sinuses. The antibiotic she is taking is appropriate, but because the blood supply into the sinus...

You are going to need to see a good ENT....have a comprehensive examination of your ears, throat, vocal cords, and an audiogram (hearing test). This is not something that can be easily solved, let alone treated, over the Internet. Yes, PET ( patulous eustachian tubes) can be one of the considerations, however, without a hands-on examination, I would not know if ...

Hello, I am a 26-year old male. For the last week or so I have been experiencing an odd problem in the upper nose/cheek area on the left side of my face. When I speak, especially at the ends of sentences, I hear a strange "click" sound in the area; it kind of sounds like two membranes are getting stuck together and then coming apart. There is no pain, and the clicking sound only happens ...

As much as I would like to help you, there is really no way for me to accurate diagnose you, let alone treat you, over the Internet. I do not know anything about you, your complete medical history, your habits/risk factors, or more importantly, any way of examining you. There can be hundreds of causes of these reactive coughs, so you will need to see your medical ...

Based on what you have shared, I still think "mono". Early in the course of mono, the detectable antibodies are so weak that many tests, especially the mono spot test, are falsely negative. If she has not improved in a few days, she needs to have an EBV titer - a more sensitive/accurate test, as well as a CBC (blood count). Mono is a virus, but...

No, it is not likely that herpes has anything to do with your eustachian tube dsfunction. Are you sure the lesions on your tongue and inside your mouth were herpetic? Some cases of ETD can last months, even with treatment. Persistent cases may require the surgical insertion of tubes. If your hearing loss is due to the ETD, and assuming you do ...

Also, I hear a lot of "Stuff" inside nose-maybe its congestion and the mucus in going into throat affecting ears? Would Claritan or Sudafed help? I was just going to try Claritan for now.

I have had an aching ear for quite a while but mostly it only bothered me at night. I can not sleep on my right side, if i do I wake up with a strong throbbing pain in my ear. My left ear is fine. This has happened on and off for months but I just didnt sleep on that side. Now in the last two or three weeks it has got worse, where I can feel the pain all day, hear a noise in my ear, sometimes...

I forgot to mention that I have never smoked a day in my life. I do have a very "strong" history of reflux. I have stayed home from work the last 2 ...

Replying to: Tonsil Problems
Recurrent tonsillitis, especially when they are due to Strep, is really an indication to take them out. Those white dots may not be infection, but rather trapped food particles forming tonsilliths ( tonsil stones) -- these can cause tonsils to enlarge and become painful. Since I can't examine you, I have no way of determining this. I don't know if it is more ...

Replying to: Middle Ear Infection....
Yes, it is possible for middle ear infections to cause permanent hearing loss, but in most cases, once the infection is controlled, and enough recovery time has elapsed for the fluid and inflammation to resolve, the hearing returns to normal levels. The rupture will need to heal before your hearing is normal again, and this can take from a few days to ...

My doctor diagnosed me with ETD about a month ago. He recommened that I use Advil Cold & Sinus which has helped immensely with the pressure build up in my ear. But, I still have quick jabs of pain and considerable drainage coming from my ear. The drainage can be either clear and kind of a goldish color or kind of a greyish white. Does this sound normal? Maybe normal isn't the right word. ...
