Replying to: antioxidents shay: From what I have read, you need to have anti-oxidants throughout the day. They do not stay in the blood stream 24 hours, and not even 6 hours usually. Like having a security guard visit your house for 3 hours, compared to having an armed guard that is posted at your home 24 hours a day. And its not the total amount. There are numerous unnamed micro nutrients in every fruit, spice and vegetable. Possibly...

Replying to: Honest Questions Thanks for your feedback Tony. You certainly deserve to be congratulated for your accomplishments with your health. To answer your question, I honestly don't know if a person with an LDL of 200 is more at risk than a person with a level of 75. Just like you, I don't understand all the mechanics involved either. I would agree with you that there are many reasons for a heart attack. I am begining to view...

Replying to: Simvastatin and grapefruit Grapefruit contains the compound bergamottin, which interacts with certain enzyme systems in the body, such as cytochrome P-450 and P-glycoprotein. These enzyme systems are responsible for breaking down statins, as well as other drugs, into more usable chemicals and transporting them in the body. When grapefruit juice is consumed at or around the time you take your statin, the components in grapefruit...

Replying to: Atrial Fibrillation And Niacin Some years ago, I also developed atrial fibrillation almost immediately after going on niacin. Went off niacin, fibrillation went away. Went back on niacin, fibrillation returned. Went off niacin again, fibrillation went away again. Of course this isn't scientific proof, but I and my doctor decided not to risk another trial. I'm not aware of having any heart arrhythmia before or since.

I am 24, 6'1", 170lbs, and my total cholesterol is 92, HDL is 29, LDL is 46, and triglycerides are 96 in mg/dl. I exercise 3 times per week and eat healthily, but why are these numbers so low? Is this bad? What can I do to fix these? I certainly do not consume anything that would be causing my HDL to be so low. I eat very little saturated fat. I had a blood test and everything else was normal, and my doctor did not say anything...

I wanted to ask you your opinion on what I should do. My dr is trying to lower my cholesterol after a stroke d/t the NuvaRing at 24 yrs old. I do not smoke and have a 16 month old at home. My husband and I would like the opportunity to have another at some point down the rd but I want your best opinion to control my cholesterol before we go about doing so. I noticed that Pravachol is a dangerous drug to be on if you want to have another baby.

I just started taking niaspan. Can you drink grapefruit juice on this drug? I'm not sure how long the drug stays in the system but if I take it at night, should it be ok to drink in the morning? What about a glass of wine at dinner. I've heard it increases flushing. What do you do if you want to have a drink of alcohol?

Bobby and Tony-- Thank you for the responses. I asked the lab technician if she thought that the Yasmin could have caused the elevated cholesterol levels, and she said that she had never heard of that but would ask my doctor; my doctor would call me back regarding the effects of the birth control pills, so that's still a possibility. I know that ...

Well, the answer to your question " what is normal?' has changed throughout the years as the guidlines for cholesterol has changed. To quote a medical technition who remembered his job back in the 1960's, said that a cholesterol level of 250 to 300 was normal then. Gradually the guidlines were lowered, and today "under 200" for total cholesterol is ...
