Replying to: HELP!!! You and your son are going to be OK . Teacher conferences are stressful and having one a week is enough to make you want to open a vein. Take a deep breath and know that he is going to be fine and that you may not have to medicate him. As many as 20% of boys in the classroom are either inattentive or hyperactive/impulsive or both. Your son is far from the only problem in that classroom. Did you know that Edison, Einstein,...

Replying to: HELP!!! Investigate possible medical issues. Even if your pediatrician thinks it is unlikely that medical issues are at play, take the time to rule them out. (We found that pediatricians are reluctant to refer children to specialists because they'd rather be the sole provider of medical treatment --yet actually the specialists were quite helpful for us.) My advice: See some specialists: Pulmonary/Allergy Specialist (rule out...

Replying to: wild grandson Dear Jaxsnana, I would encourage you to have your grandson for a second evaluation, either by a child psychiatrist, child psychologist, or behaviorist. As a nurse, you know that the first doctor did not perform an appropriate evaluation. A history, testing, and detailed evaluation are all essential to correct diagnosis. Until you have a diagnosis, it is difficult to even point you to appropriate articles to read....

Is ADHD considered a disability?...
Published (2009-12-04 07:03:27)
Replying to: Is ADHD considered a disability? Depends on who you talk to. (Despite what any medical manual will say.) My family physician considers it a manageable disorder that, at certain intensities, requires a 504 or IEP. However, the county school board does not consider it a disability/disorder and will not give a child a 504 or IEP for it. My son doesn't need help with his Aspergers anymore, but, even on medication, needs help...

Hello- Does anyone have any suggestions on how to pick a psychiatrist for my 6 year old son? I got a list from my son's healthcare provider but how do you pick from a list of 20?? It's a little overwhelming!! Also, I don't know if this is allowed but does anyone in the Seattle or Lynnwood area know of a good child psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD/depression/bi-polar?

My 8 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD and was prescribed the drug Focalin. I'm concerned about the effects if and when he is ever able to discontinue this or any similar drug treatment. With prolonged use of this medication, drug dependence and abnormal behavior is a very real possibility. Withdrawal symptoms will likely occur after stopping this drug. Any information you can provide as it pertains to this possible side...

Replying to: outburst of rage I have a child with ADHD, with an impulse disorder, PDD NOS (almost aspergers), and an anxiety disorder. As if one diagnosis wasnt enough. He is my 8 year old. I mentioned at his last psychistarist appointment that he was going thru some of the same behaviors you mentioned. I had to even pull over my car on the way home one day because we were playing a game where we look for cars and whoever calls the car first...

Replying to: How to find a Child Psych?? Hi, I have a few suggestions. First off, go through the list of pdocs (short for child psychiatrist) your insurance will take. Ongoing visits can become very, very costly and if the pdoc takes your insurance, that is a HUGE plus. Second, make sure the pdoc is board certified. Very important !!! Chances are, you'll get a better quality / smarter pdoc. Thirdly, here is a link to The Child and...

Some ADHD kids need an astablished routine. Anytime that routine is broken (holiday break), it takes a couple days to a couple weeks to readjust to the routine. Give his time to readjust. Expect the same thing to happen after Christmas Break.

ADHD is considered a medical condition and will not be paid for by the school. Please read as much as you can about ADHD and then make an appointment with a child psychiatrist or a child neurologist. Please learn about the consequences of untreated (treated = meds and/OR behavior modification). Don't go into this with heals dug in. Learn about what your son is ...

I have a 6 year old who exhibits classic hyperactive behavior frequently in a variety of settings (at home, the doctors office, sporting events, with babysitters, out and about, etc.) BUT seems to do fine in school. He does occaisonally need a reminder or redirection in school but they say he has control and is not at all what they would say is adhd. Is that possible? Has anyone else ...

It is very normal for a child who has adhd to be unable to function at school yet be able to focus for hours on something like a video game. If it is something that is of interest to him he can give it his full attention for hours but for things that don't hold his interest it isn't suprising to hear that he can't focus on it for long. Most ...

I can sympathize - my son is the same way with writing assignments. Some of the accommodations the school offered for him were to let him type instead of write, or to get that computer program that lets him talk and it writes what he says - good for reports and such, but not much good if he's taking an essay test in school. He didn't want any of these, but you might...

Hi, It is not uncommon for children to develop tics - medication induced tics, or a tic he may have developed without meds. I would definitely see the Doctor ASAP and let him decide the best course of action. He will probably decide to try a different med and see if the tic goes away. Here is a link about tics to explore. http://www.childbrain.com/...
