You'd be very surprised. Before selling my ad-free free web host I was pulling in a profit each month with less than 1,000 users (I pruned inactive accounts often and only allowed US and CA sign-ups). My last free web host was less than 10 months old before I sold it and I've provided a lot of consultation for quite a few other free web hosts (I guess it comes with the territory of being the Community Leader @ FreeWHT ) who are doing...

You'll definitely attract people that are new to the webmaster world. So it could be a great idea if you can make it work and keep it cost effective. But personally, I have too much exp with developing sites so it wouldn't sway me one way or another. Most likely I wouldn't use the service if a host gave you access to it anyway. But like I said, it will attract new webmasters and more and more people are getting into owning their...

There are plenty of ways to make a profit without displaying ads on user's sites. I personally wasn't making much of a profit because I wasn't interested in making money but some free hosts are making upwards of $100/day in advertisement income (with a much bigger client base than mine of course). I'm not going to go into to much detail (I'll save it for my book ) but Google Adsense advertisements earn a decent income...

Quote: I know this doesn’t need to be said but I'll say it anyways. Why use MaxMind or any other fraud screening software if your going to ignore the warning signs it gives up. True, and well said. Do most of you guys just silently ignore the order? Do you send a mail with the reasons of the decline or the reasons why it was not accepted? These questions obviously do not apply to those who accept orders / or verify and accept.

I'd say 1/5 people read the TOS but it's just a guess. And yeah, now that I think about it, alibi definitely isn't the word but I got nothing else. But as you said, it does show that your intentions were good, you didn't want the stuff on your server in the first place. The only way to get a good answer is to ask a lawyer. I'm working my way there but the law I've been studying has nothing to do with these kinds...

It wouldn't make a difference to me since I do my own coding. It would really depend on who your target client is. If you're marketing to small businesses, possibly but its a big "maybe" since they PROBABLY have their own developer(s). Large corporations? Definitely not. If you're targeting the general "personal webpage" audience then it could be a desirable feature.

It won't get you very far at all, you may find a site targeted to whatever the niche of your site is that you can get an ad for a week or two with $50 but that's about it. The best thing to do would probably be to spend that $50 at $0.10/post paying people to post on various forums related to your site's topic and mentioning your site (without actually directly just spamming, etc). Some will ...

We started by getting involved with local not for profits, and joining the local Chamber of Commerce in several nearby towns (they typically offer inexpensive mailing campaigns and lists). We also wrote articles for local papers (the more local the better, we've found) in exchange for small ads and a byline. These got our name known, and helped get our foot in the door when contacting local ...

Of course you should use QuickBooks or some type of accounting software to keep track of everything not only just taxes but your profit & loss (no billing system can track everything...), expense tracking, etc. Any good business is going to use this.

I would say a three ear billing cycle does not work. We had a 24 month cycle to start with but no one used it so we removed it. It is a big risk for the client to pay for services that far in advance. Especially in a recession where companies of all size and nature are going bust.

We did not have the exact same situation, it would be hard for domain names but i do not think it is hard for hosting accounts; I would get a list of domains hosted under his account; get the whois admin emails from the domain list and send them and email with the things to do list; If the whois does not help, I would visit each web site and get the contact details or send sales@domain ...

Having a terms of service that states the customer is on their own for anything stupid they do helps, but anyone can sue you for any reason and then you have to spend time, effort, and money to defend it. Unfortunately, that is part of doing business. If you know they are shady to begin with, do not host them!

Almost every provider will have Cogent blended into their BGP mix, especially in the UK. As long as they have set it up right and have not got it as their only provider its no problem so I wouldn't avoid hosts using it. Defiantly don't expect to pay $100 for a reseller package and then make 5,000 dollars. The best advice I can give you from personal experience is creating a plan. Start with a business plan if you don't want to do that or believe it's necessary that evaluate if you are sure you want to start a web hosting company. When I first started Server Core Systems I had a plan and ideas. I had...
