I've finally finished the skeleton of the plane. The wing was initially built as one piece and then I cut out the areas for the ailerons. All I have to do now is build in a slot for a removable light weight undercarriage. Im still not sure how I will set up the ailerons to operate but I think just direct via wire and control horns will be the go. Im going to now sand everything to ensure I get all the "lumpy bits off". I...

Ultra-Micro Charger
Published (2010-01-02 06:56:00)
Well today I put a 70mAh Etomic battery in my Ember II and ran it to LVC. I took four new eneloop AA's right out of the package without charging and measured the voltage at 1.328-1.329 volts. I installed them in the Ember's charger and plugged in the 70mAh LiPo. Thirty minutes later I timed thirty seconds between led flashes indicating a fully charged battery. Removed the eneloops and measured them at 1.294-1.295 volts. I again ran...

Ultra-Micro Charger
Published (2010-01-02 03:54:00)
As I recall, AA NiMH's weigh in at 1.2 volts, versus 1.5 volts for Alkaline. I have had good luck with Radio Shack's 2100 AA's, using them in some transmitters as well as some digital cameras. They also are the batteries I use in the Ember and UM P-51 Mustang chargers, when I USE those chargers. 99% of the time, for charging 1S Lipos, I now use the Four-Play charger. I have found the Radio Shack 2100's to be longer lasting...

Are they actually 1.5 volts? I tried some Duracell NiMh AAs a while ago and found that the charger would shut down decause they operate at a lower voltage than the alkaline ones.

Stripped Linear Servo Repair
Published (2010-01-02 01:48:00)
I just finished repairs and final testing of my SECOND stripped Ember elevator servo. This time I made sure I pushed a nice amount of CA into the follower hole. Last time I MAY have not used enough. I put the tip of the CA applicator up to the hole of the follower and pushed it in, in fact so much that I could see it coming out the other side. Hopefully this will minimize my need to do the repair again. As stated above, it IS a very satisfying...

Ultra-Micro Charger

That should work fine; just make sure the polarities are correct. The 4 port Celectra charger might be available on eBay fairly cheap, it uses 4 D cells so it lasts quite a while

Flew the Vapor in the Bloomington MN national guard armory yesterday afternoon-evening. More today after the show. I've just about worn the poor old thing out! I think I'll pick up a new B&F one next week for the Iowa trip next weekend. You ready Dave?

Saying NiMH battery voltage is 1.2 volts is like saying a 3S Lipo battery is 11.1 volts. That's the NOMINAL voltage. Actually NiMH batteries will be around 1.5 volts when fully charged just like a 3S Lipo will be 12.6 volts when fully charged. Bill

Just thinking out loud here, but would a BEC set to 6 volts (4 AA) with a Deans plug on the end that splices to the ESC and the end that goes to the receiver connected to the normal Parkzone charger work out?

It sounds most doable. I would aim for ailerons myself. This avoids the dihedral the wings would need to stay stable in flight if they were missing.

Many, many thanks for this link. I just experienced a stripped servo on my Ember 1. Might just now be able to fix it. I guess landing it on the refridge door took its toll! Thanks again.

From what I have read on at one other site, the plane flys fine, outdoors in calm weather, and indoors. There is a video prepared by or for Hobbico of the plane flying outdoors. Another video, non-Hobbico, of an indoor event. There is a thread elsewhere: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11 29361 that has info on the plane. I have one on backorder with Tower Hobbies. ...
