Osceola's 11/25/09
Published (2009-11-27 12:09:00)
Greeley Ponds trail was wet and a littly muddy. Mt Osceola trail going up East Osceola had a lot of clearance from the trees. (Not brushing up against you like on the Carters) Some ice on the exposed rock sections but easily navigated around it. Bushwack to the two western peaks, 4220' and 4114', picked up a herd path pretty quick. My 11 year old son spotted some "metal junk" and we decded to check it out. And there...

Date of Hike: Mon. 11-23-09 Trails: Caps Ridge Trail Caps Ridge Trail was in great shape today. Lower portion dry and no ice to speak of on the Cap Scrambles. The only ice was some broken ice within about 150 ft. of the summit and easy to avoid. Otherwise, all the rocks and scrambles were bone dry. No traction was needed today. It was a nice warm sunny day with only a slight breeze at the top. Under cast only on the East side of the...

Kinsman Ridge Trail was the familiar eroded trench up to the departure from the ski glade then in good shape to the summit. Some mud. No significant blowdowns. Very nasty thin ice on some rocks, as others have been encountering, in the middle section. Traction not practicable for the short, slick sections. Another locally nice day. Pretty clouds spilling over Franconia Ridge. Dry cleaner hike: In by 9, out by 11; left time for the Brett Weston...

Trail conditions: Variable and will be changing overnight I am sure but today..some wet and muddy spots as you ascend the logging road. Light snow cover which got deeper on good trailbed all way to summit. A couple of slippy spots..2 inches of snow at summit. Equipment: light rain then steady moderate snow had us in gortex and waterproof boots..no traction needed today Cooments: late start and early finish made this a good post turkey feast...

Went up the falling waters trail. Trail was in good shape. Some mud and a little ice near the top. Ridge was windy. In and out of the clouds with a great rainbow over the Franconia ridge. A little ice coming down to Greenleaf hut, but easy to step over or around. Old Bridle path was in great condition.

The Horn via Unknown Pond &...
Published (2009-11-19 15:18:00)
This hike began and ended at the Unknown Pond trailhead on Mill Brook Road. Overall, both the Unknown Pond Trail and the Kilkenny Ridge Trails were in good condition. There were a few very small patches of ice hardly worth mentioning. There were the usual wet/muddy spots near the beginning of the Unknown Pond Trail. However, none of these spots were a "show-stopper" by any means. Also, there were no blowdowns of any...

Three Sisters (Chocorua) loop:...
Published (2009-11-23 12:50:00)
The sisters were a more challenging scramble than I expected. Slabs were slightly damp but not bad enough for anybody to turn back. Blazes are badly faded, not that it will matter once the snow covers them. One section below North Sister where the trail was narrow and hard to follow through deep drifts of leaves. Lost the trail on the new-looking rockslide on North Sister. It's probably been said here before, but: do not follow tracks...

Owl's Head - 11/21/09
Published (2009-11-22 16:54:00)
Lincoln Woods Tr. - some puddles, but all easily avoided. Black Pond Tr. - squishy - but no problem. Black Pond Bushwhack - the driest part of our entire day !! Lincoln Brook Tr. (the portion WEST and NORTH of the Southern-most "dip" in the trail) - quite wet in spots and we needed to go off trail a dozen times to avoid deep water. All stream crossings were "rock-hoppable". Owls Head Path - mostly dry EXCEPT...

Webster Jackson Loop - Nov 18, 2009
Published (2009-11-19 09:45:00)
Trails: Some ice, mostly avoidable. Largest ice patches on Webster Cliff Trail between Jackson and Webster. Few (5-6) blowdowns, easily gotten over/around. Equipment: I did not bother to use the poles or traction devices I was carrying. Either or both might have been useful on the Webster Cliff Trail section. Note: This route requires a fair amount of agility for hikers without opposable thumbs. I was hiking with my two young mutts and a...

Vose Spur via bushwhack
Published (2009-11-21 20:19:00)
Started on Signal Ridge Trail. Brook crossing required stepping on rocks with some water going over them. Carrigan Notch Trail, again brook crossing was a little difficult with most rocks having some water going over. The bushwhacking wasn't that difficult. There are a lot of birches and some spruce but nothing too difficult. A lot of blowdowns that needed to be climbed over, under and around. The cannister is there at the summit and...
