I believe the dialouge changes mainly as you advance the story, even if you have never spoken to them. A few times, the dialogue changes with Friendship and Love level. It also changes with the seasons.

I'm sorry this bothered you. Run is a toggle in RF2, if that helps. I don't remember, but there might be an options menu that changes that kind of thing. A lot of games have menus like that, but I don't remember seeing one in this game.
