Probably a coincidence. I too got my first rrod last week after owning my console for a year and a half. As for cost, the warranty on rrod is three years. You can send it away and have it fixed for free. Just go to xbox.com/support.

If you use the First Recon class, getting kills with the Tac Knife will count as kills for the Magnum, so eventually you will unlock it that way.
