Hey Frank, I was not trying to tell people to not file /A. I was just trying to point out that normally you would use your GPS-based navigation system to go direct to a point. In quite a few countries this is a requirement these days. Well, we discussed that alreay. And of course, I personally would not hesitate to also fly basic IFR with those stone-age navigation methods, but practically it is not done anymore, at least in planes that I fly....

VA Helper Released
Published (2009-11-20 02:48:00)
Okay, some things I know are rough around the edges. I've got a helpful PM for some software. The plan was to just get off and going. The site will be improved. Currently I have a VA application. The website will develop over time. I do plan in getting rid of the fill in the blank forums in the future. What I'm aiming for now is to get going and stay steady.

I feel like an idiot...

I've done that before, and I haven't gotten in trouble for it. However, I have gotten banned twice for accidentally leaving myself logged on after controlling (thought I logged out; pretty sure I did it back to back too). However, now, I just blame my sleeping at the "wheel" on having heated arguments with my copilot, to which ends with us just surfing the net on our laptops.

well,I use a chart, Works every time. The Majestic Dash 8 has the same I believe (or it may be that I never ever set the arrival runway because I punch in the star and other info manually) but I have never had trouble finding the right runway as I always ensure I have the relevant charts with me. At the very least a chart will give some form of situational awareness and I usually go from there....

I think I was influenced by the design of the controls. The Saitek X52 has a throttle that is designed for the left hand. The joystick seems a bit more neutral, but with the throttle on the left, I put the joystick on the right. The mouse is also on the left, because I have a graphics tablet on the right on which the joystick usually rests (I'm right-handed). I don't worry about it too much, ...

Please don't bring the SpaceShuttle on to VATSIM. It is one of the few aircraft that is not allowed on the network and I wouldn't want you to get into trouble! Most of the aircraft you should be able to find at avsim or flightsim.net. Of course, X Plane comes with a default Shuttle and has the ability to start with the shuttle in orbit!

Probably gyro precession. Hit the "D" key and see if it aligns right.

As my understanding, I would fly the Heading given on a dir course to Said Intersection then proceed on course as Dirrected. So dial in both VORs and set them for intersection radials. If all else fails just get ATC to explain / or double check with them what you are going to do and see what they say "XXX CTR, XXX will fly DIR TO XXX intersection and continue on course, is that correct?" or ...

Been there done that, and that was fortunately a one-off for me. These days the pilot a.k.a me flies only if sufficiently awake to say "huh?" cheers Tom.

I prefer the Eaglesoft Citation X, although it still has some rough edges (and probably will forever, since I imagine it won't be updated). The two products are close enough, though, that I think it would be a question of personal preference for many. I didn't like the kiddie-style documentation of the Wilco or the various cheats (fields in the FMS that don't exist in real life but make ...
