Mike, You are not being a jerk. Your point is valid. My "mentors" come from a variety of backgrounds. The one common theme is that they all have many thousands of hours in their logbooks which means that they have the abiltity to stay alive. They come from a mix of private pilots, airline pilots, military pilots and glider pilots and include a CFI. What amazes me about the group is that in spite of the variety of backgrounds,...

Thats what I love about this community of aviators and builders. I can post a situation regarding safety and get excellent advice from experienced pilots. It honestly is a place where one can become a better pilot (and an addicted builder ). Thanks for all the imput and encouragement. I'll definitely be putting it to use.

When I flew overseas we regularly re-fueled our 206's in the field from Gerry cans. Even in the humid jungle vapors are as much of an issue as static electricity as Richard mentions above (the vapors track the terrain to a low point where they can ignite from camp-fire, cigarette butt etc. hundreds of feet away ). We used Mr. Funnel anti-static fuel filters/funnels and to the best of my knowledge never had an accident with several hundred...

I think you did an awesome job. There is no way to know how a person is going to react but I think you may have picked up on an early warning. She thought there wouldn't be a problem making me think, and honestly probably you also, that there may indeed be a problem. All in all though my hat is off to you.

Great work, Dan. There's some sensitivity to weight of course, esp added in the nose of an 8. About how much weight would the insulation kit add? How thick is the material? The metallic shield used - what's needed, what are you testing? Impressive results! Thanks...

I cannot imagine how the light sensor (to dim the screen) could possibly be linked to the ALT hold or rate of climb. This is gonna be interesting! Keep us informed.

I have seen people refuel from plastic and metal jugs. Is there a safe way to do this? I live in SC where the humidity is so high that static buildup isn't as much of a problem as it might be for people living in dryer climates... Any best practices? Any land mines to avoid?

I have flown 40 since I finished training in Oct 2008. My instructor told me to call him anytime I had questions. His number is on my cell. I also fly with a 1000+ hr pilot of an RV-9A. His number is also on my cell. I wanted it this way. I don't know if all new pilots want to ask questions thinking someone will make fun of them. The first time I took my family up in the 172L, I was running...

Well, there's a three-fold purpose in making sure you have a good seal on your firewall penetrations: 1) Prevent fire burn-through (on a really bad day) 2) Prevent oil or other stuff from weeping through (on not as bad of a day) 3) Prevent wires from grounding out on the sharp edge of the firewall (any day) It's up to you as to how far you want to go. I used the firewall shields ...

I'm not sure what to think about all of this. Don't kid yourself- everything about this hobby is dangerous. What we like to do is minimize our risk. For many, this involves eliminating night flying. On the other hand, night flying is one of the best times to be aloft...... if nothing goes wrong. It is beautiful, smooth, and much less congested at most GA airports. Sure, night flying ...

Ray, Here are some dimensions measured off my RV-7A nosegear. I don't have the plane on the gear yet, so it was easy to get these. Note that mine is the new nosegear. The diameter dimensions have been reduced from what my caliper measurement was by .007 on the diameter (.0035 per side) to account for the powder coating thickness*. Thus, these dimensions represent the bare metal....

David Clark makes a nice helmet that allows you to snap in a regular DC headset. It is pretty light weight and has a snap on visor as well. I am using one during my aerobatic testing in phase one and will be selling it once I get done with phase one in case anyone out there might be interested down the road... I believe Aircraft Spruce sells it. It is my opinion that a parachute does you no...
