We have two and a half RV's in our hangar now, and none of them are (or will be) the same. The Valkyrie has hinges everywhere, just like Van intended! I like the very clean look, and it takes me very little time to remove the entire cowl - quicker than the RV-6, which has screws on the sides (between top and bottom) and under the belly with hinges and wires on the top and sides. On the -3 project, I am leaning towards camlocks on the...

If you like the production airplane environment you may not like the RV. It is a lot like comparing a sedan to a sports car I think. If it is just you traveling with another person of like interest and you are not interested in the ambiance of Wichita or Kerrville or Vero Beach I think you will like the RV if you buy a good one and there are some dogs out there. I have an 180 HP RV-6A that I built over a 8 year period and I routinely beat the...

I welded up extension arms for an engine stand and made a wood stand out of 2x4's for the tail to rotate on. Works great! This should save my back. Thanks for the responses.

Kevin has arranged for my propeller to be picked up so that the finish can be redone. It seems the issue is with expectation and the differences we see in the finished product. I started this thread because I was trying to determine if what I was seeing was normal. For me it was a safety issue, with all I have learned in the build process about stress risers it seems any type of blemish on the propeller is of concern. With the few responses...

There is a kind of drillbit available at home improvement stores called a "Hinge bit". It's kind of like a drill stop and drill bit all combined into one. They're used when drilling door hinges to a door frame, but do a reasonably good job of centering the drill on the dimpled hole. Hope that helps!

I'm using them and find they are easier to to work with than the piano hinges. In addition, the piano hinges are not to break on the bottom and these don't have that problem. About the only cons I can think of are the fasteners takes slightly longer to get the cowl off. Putting it on I would think the hinges take longer because you have to line everything up. The other big con for some people is strictly esthetics, you see the...

.....is to use the fasteners around the top rear cowl, spaced at 4" intervals and three per side under the bottom cowl, with piano hinges on the sides and vertical ones for the bottom cowl. The piano hinge pin is .090" and the eyes are .125", a .035" gap and allows the cowl to move/vibrate slightly and eventually you'll see 'smoke' behind the top cowl with the hinge setup. Best,

Hi Tim,
We routinely fly long cross-countries in our RV-8 or RV-6 (depending on who wins the coin toss). 600 miles is just about a perfect planning leg for the -8, just a touch longer than we like for the -6, but if the weather is fine and there aren't any headwinds, that's a one-hop as well. Speeds of about 165 knots are almost guaranteed, and I usually flight plan 170. We fly IFR when ...

I can't answer the "what is acceptable" question, but if you haven't riveted the bottom skins on yet, you can clamp the rear spar to remove all twist before riveting the bottom skins on. I riveted the bottom skins of both wings when the wings were in the jig for exactly this reason. Before riveting the bottom skins on one wing, one wing had ~3/16 twist if the rear spar was unclamped. It only ...

On my -7A, the spar cap bars measure at the root:
Bottom cap bar: 1.43 high/1.25 fwd-aft
Top cap bar: 1.5 high/1.25 fwd-aft
The spar cap bars are a single piece of aluminum. The thickness (fwd-aft direction) is stepped down several times from the root towards the wing tip, but I cannot take any measurements as my wings are completed.
That said, I don't believe these measurements...

When I started my license 13 years ago, I kept both a paper copy and a digital copy, in a database that I created in Access. I stopped keeping up the digital copy after a while because the one I had created, while useful to *me*, was completely unusable by anyone else. And that meant that once I had forgotten how to use it, it was unusable by me too.
I did manage to get the data that I ...

you are doing a great service- - helping out the helpless. it is insane that we intentionally kill millions of animals each year in this country. I strongly encourage all rv pilots to consider signing up for a PnP mission. 501c3. often, the animals are pulled from a kill 'shelter', sometimes with days or hours to spare, and sent to foster homes or if lucky, forever homes. these types of missions...
