The composite gaskets are a better match and they come in several thicknesses to compensate for milling and decking of the heads/block

We like our SPX. We ran a performer before, and had a big difference, and even had a big 60' improvement.

What would be the best thing (within reason, remember I'm pinching pennies) to use as a straight edge? Tap all the bolt holes, check. Careful use of acid solution in the water passages works, check. Minor pitting on a straight deck is OK, check. Cylinder bores...they actually looked pretty clean and smooth. My fingernails never got caught on anything up & down all cylinders. Would I still need to concern myself with those, and if...

just because you put 10:1 pistons in it doesn't mean that you will have 10:1 compression. When I put 10:1 pistons in my engine I ended up with I believe somewhere in the 8.7:1 range. This is because the distance from the top of the piston at tdc to the block deck was .080 along with .045 gasket it ends up way lower compression. The only way to guarantee 10:1 is to have the block decked to I ...

ick,I can't give you real feedback on the pump.I do have one here that I
bought for a similar build that I have waiting in the sidelines. It is a
very nice looking HP pump,if it works as advertised,I believe that you
can't go wrong with it.Just my opinion.

I run an old GS club cam made by Lunati, Part#33399, Grind# H225-235, 112
lobe separation, 108 centerline, 493 IN 524 EX lift, 225 DUR @.050 IN and
235 DUR @.050 EX. 503 HP on the dyno, good idle, I've driven it to work and
back a couple of times, 55 miles each way. With 3.55 gears ran low 12's
with an 850 Holley, then high 11's with a Biggs 950.

I assume the only issue is you'd have to get a shorter driveshaft.

All covers interchange, in late 1970 or early 1971 the cover passage that
mates up with the oil pickup hole in the block was enlarged to match up
with the larger passage in the block. Not sure about quality control issues
in later covers.

Not a lot different here. I have stage 1 valves, professionally ported but no flow numbers. 3:73 gears with a 200r4. 106mph I think there should be another 5mph in this car. I do think this cam is street gas friendly and sounds great.

So 73' heads and a 72' intake?
I'm not 100 percent sure but I think that might be your problem.
There is some kind of modification that needs to be done to the water passages or gasket to get the correct cooling of the heads.
But I am pretty sure you can't just bolt on an older style intake on 73' - 76' heads without a modification.
Also try a fuel pressure gage and see what you have ...

If you have all the bolts, dist. etc. out, spray some PB Blaster on the
guide pins and try working it back and forth. Sometimes they are corroded
