This has been happening to me on and off for 25 years. Seems like the only time I have initiative to practice is when i'm jamming with someone or have a little gig lined up. Something always entices me to pick it back up though. Maybe get into some recording? __________________ M EGADET H covers w/bt... Hendrix rhythm

Funny, I got my head round Hendrix's playing the other way, once i'd learned the basics of theory ie notes, major scale and chord progressions then it was blindingly obvious that all he was doing was embellishing a basic chord shape with additional scale tones. The mechanics of it became irrelevant, it was simply a case of adding or substracting the odd note here and there - theory was what demystified it for me. __________________...

Yaaa thisll prolly get moved. But Id suggest playing something that eveyrone knows. Learn To Fly, Monkey Wrench from the Foo would both be good. Stellar would be..well...Stellar. Depending on how good the singer is, some Stone Temple Pilots might be a good idea as well.

don't go thinking it's a lefty problem, that probably has very little to do with it..
how to develop speed: play as fast as you can CLEANLY, until you can go a bit faster.

No!!! Definitely NO! So many great musicians just live! Don't you enjoy your music, and don't others enjoy your music? Just bc you don't "make it big" with your hs buddies doesn't mean that your music is bad! Keep playing!

Sometimes I record myself humming the melody with my mobile, slapping my fingers against it at the same time to make sure I'll understand the rhythmic context later when I listen to it.

Some of the more sensitive tones are removed from the diatonic scale so it becomes more versatile.

Tap along to the beat and just count it. And learn about different time signatures and where the beats fall etc.

Chord voicings, for sure. When I'm tracking rhythm parts, I find it very important to add interesting notes to my chords.

Personally, I never run a gate across the whole mix when I'm mixing a band live. I'll usually put one across the vocals and kick and snare drums but you will run the risk of some unwanted cutoffs if you gate the whole mix at a threshold of -20. At -40 or -60 you're really not gating out all that much anyway.
As for compression, you really do need a dedicated compressor for kick and ...

Modes can be either major or minor. They are each played over specific chords, there is a lesson on this site about what chords to use them over. In a nutshell, there are two kinds of modes, Major and Minor. To find out whether its major or minor, just look at the relation between the root and 3rd.
I can explain this to you in more detail if you wish, just pm me.

Well, I use octaves a whole lot, and more often from lower to higher than vice versa. I think this will be a pretty common answer.

how do YOU go about writing riffs/songs?
do you use scales? if so, what types of scales? what other types of technique? and what type of music do you play? im just trying to get some different ideas from different individuals, not looking for anything specific.

When you want the sound of the minor pentatonic, ie you don't want to use the 2nd and 6th tones of the minor scale, for whatever reason that may be.

A Lydian is A B C# D# E F# G# - you need one of each letter in a diatonic scale.
A Maj has F#, C# and G#, and Lydian has a sharpened 4th - so D#
Chord-wise I'd just vamp AMaj (or AMaj7) and BMaj (or B7) if you need to make it sound Lydian.
If you don't need to make it sound Lydian I wouldn't worry about modes at all until you have the Major scale nailed so you really understand ...

Ok, so i've been fartin around here for awhile and some of you know theory like the guy in Good Will Hunting. I thought I knew a little and the little turned to even less after awhile. I've been playing for 25 years now on and off. Sometimes I don't even own a ...

just session musician, you must be ridiculously competent with your instrument. Sight reading, musical theory and chops gotta be top notch.
they go into the studio and are told to play something or write something by the producer and they do it. right there and then.
