No idea how long you've been playing so: is your guitar in tune? Other than that, I can only really say, slow down, make sure you're relaxed and build up to speed slowly.

Is it just picking that makes it go cold, or other things? If it's just picking, it'll be your technique. Make sure you're not cutting off the circulation at the elbow or wrist. If it's with other things aswell, then it's just your hand. You probably should see a doctor or something, or (if you don't want to do that) try doing some stretching exercises to warm up and get the blood flowing. __________________...

No, you tap the 12 like a hammer on, pull off to the 7, hammer the 9, then tap (or you could hammer) the 11. If I'm reading that correctly. When you say ' trill', do you mean those 4 notes are repeating?

Your question is a bit unclear. Are you talking about the intro section? Or are you asking if you can play the verse using barre chords as opposed to open chords?

More than likely it sounds bad because your accuracy is underdeveloped for that speed.
If it helps to break it into 2 parts like you mentioned, go for it. But you'll still need to practice it all together as well.
The real fixer is playing it slow. Get all the little glitches out of your muscle memory and very very gradually work it up to speed. Look for things like unmuted open ...

I'm not familiar with this lick, but if you simply cannot physically play this riff after practicing it, perhaps try moving a few of the notes to different places on the neck. The 12th fret on the D string is a D note, and the 15th fret B string is a D note as well. Perhaps that will help. My advice would be to simply practice the lick though. You'll get it.

i think the good players don't use the "faster speed 2" that you mention.

Speed is a byproduct of accuracy. Simply practice the desired passage to perfection at a low tempo, then increase to the speed at which you are practicing it slowly until you can play it at the desired tempo.

If you're worried about "ideal technique" you should get a professional guitar teacher. If you already have one, ask them. They'll probably be much more helpful than the Pit.
I'm a perfect example of my own argument, because I have no idea what the answer to your question is
EDIT: oops, wrong forum, for some reason I thought I was in the Pit

Palm muting and power chords are a must.
Also, if you wanna try making up your own little licks learn the patterns for the minor pentatonic scale, presuming you don't already know it.
Also, learning the notes for E minor on the low E and A strings will help you in making your own power chord riffs, that's because most Metallica songs are in the key of E minor.
Enjoy!

Yes. Bad habits lead can lead to unnecessary tension that a couple hours of correct practice could eliminate entirely. If you strum poorly and cannot alternate pick well, then my recommendation is to practice these and smooth out your playing. The one habit that is worst of all is anchoring. That's where your finger(s) (often the pinkie and/or the ring finger(s)) are touching the body of the...

well, try and learn songs you like, pick easy ones then harder ones. Don't give up if it seems too hard. There's lots of lessons here on UG.
Find and learn scales that help you play what's in your head.(Recommend that you learn the major scale first)
Learn modes and how they fit into each other in scales.
Practice your picking and muting until you're satisfied with what you hear....

That seems like a decent schedule, but i'd include some relaxed playing as well, so you can also enjoy the skills and songs you've learned so far. Maybe you're already doing that besides this schedule, but that's the only suggestion I can give.
