A famous and old variety adapted to coastal climates, 'Gravenstein' is not uncommon down here.

Olive tree height issue!
Published (2009-12-11 20:05:00)
By now you've probably moved the trees inside but I thought I'd add a word about olive trees in winter—you mention that the trees wouldn't get enough light inside at the their height. Light during winter isn't that important to olives once they go dormant. Of course keeping them inside might not encourage them to go dormant!

Birds eating buds - help ! !

We almost never see a crow around our property but we have an abundance of small birds because of all our feeders. I seem to be the architect of my own problem !

Avocado Pits

Earth worms are far more invaluable to the body. But not to the soul.... Do not eat anything that has never attained farmed status in your region, it could kill you... our local farmers market would not be qualified to advise us on tropical vegetation for consumption, so be wary, conversely, locally you never see corn stalks on the menu nor do you of any nightshade plant, other than the fruit... I tried pepper plant tips, not the greatest...

If anthracnose has rotted out main branches and trunk it is probably time for use as firewood.

Keep it where the pot will not freeze up, but the air temperature will not cause the top to start growing too early. Maybe leave it where it is, wrap the pot with insulation if frost is expected to penetrate the porch. And plant out early next spring, if winter is likely to have hard frosts that penetrate the soil.

Plant the seed in acidic soil in a pot, and keep warm and moist (but not too wet). They like hot humid climates in summer (30°C, high humidity), and a winter minimum of 10°C. They are quite easy to grow when young, as long as the air around them is not too dry.

Winter is the normal time to do major pruning on temperate fruit trees. Late winter is better if there is a chance of winter injury, but Redhaven is hardy enough for this not to be a problem in Zone 6. I prune my peach tree any time of the year and have never noticed any negative effects.
