Exhaust replacement - '83 GLT
Published (2009-11-24 18:52:00)
That is the catalytic converter on the US model 240 turbos. So, if you are in the US or a place where you got US model 240 turbos then that is the cat. They are available online from places usually at around $250 or so. If you are in CA you'll have to get a CA certified one which will cost more. For example you can buy a replacement for about $250 from FCPGroton.com. I would recommend you get a new O2 sensor to help be sure your car is in...

exhaust leaking before turbo
Published (2009-11-24 13:38:00)
looking at that picture, it is unlikely that it's leaking from the flange, it's probably leaking from a crack in the back of the manifold. since you can't see it most people assume it's coming from the flange.

I think I am siding on going with a 531 head on this baby. It could be this, that, now I know it's in the head, whether it's the gasket, a crack, valve, whatever, getting a new head will do it- and if the head isn't cracked, I can always sell it or use it on the 940. I was thinking 16v next summer, but jeez, take a look at my skills, pretty weak, so I am siding on simplicity to make some extra power.

All 93s got the squirter motor. You also have an AW-71L transmission and most likely, a G80 locker in the rear axle. Keep the entire drive train, the radiator and the computers/fuel injection parts. If you like having air conditioning, I would keep the AC system as well.

Alas, poor cylinder 5. Seems like the other exhaust valve is starting to go too. the head: Carbon atop my pistons. Whats the safest way to clean this without knocking it all around the engine?

I have a keyboard this time. Starter, alt, and door panels will work no prob. On the door panels you might need to buy some new red anchors. Your 740 probably has ABS so you should be fine with the master cylinder. Just check the brake lines first and make sure they match up. Jumbo brake rotors are found on turbos around 91? and up. I think all you need is the rotor, caliper, and caliper bracket to make em work. The front end parts obviously...

The voltage should not be fluctuating in anyway and it would cause some major issues with the computer if it does.

Should be under the dash on the drivers side behind the knee bolster.
Remove the knee bolster and it is easy to find.

92 was a good year imo.
Gas tanks are all punctured at the junk yards down here to drain the fuel,
so that leaves parts cars.....
Easy swap otherwise.
IDK how it is up there.

The standard size on a 240 sedan is 185/70-14. So, it's a 10% smaller side
wall size and that will lower the vehicle. It'll affect the highway gear
quite a bit. I'd also worry about ground clearance. It might make the car a
bit too low. I wouldn't run this unless you really had too.

High NOx can mean the engine's running lean, and also catalytic converters (even new and well functioning) can have trouble getting rid of NOx once things get lean. I've seen a great graph (though can't find it right now) of how NOx, CO and something else vary with AFR both before and after the cat. NOx goes through the roof, even after the ...

Unless you've got and can figure out how to usea tranny jack (on soft sand?), you might want to have the yard pull the engine and tranny out together, e.g. using a forklift or equivalent as an engine crane, and then separate it from the engine when it is out of the car and more accessible.

Manual or power steering? Is this the rubber disc down by the rack? Or is
this the one up near the body where the steering comes out of the firewall?

I see no opportunity for savings there.
Each repair involves a different focus on a different area of the car.
Re: head gasket: are you losing coolant?
Oil in water or water in oil?
Ask the garage to run tests to confirm the problem.

Throw up an ad in the wanted section. Someone somewhere has an old head with sodium valves hanging around. If not, there are lots of people on this board that use stainless and still create tons of power.

The clutch disc with the friction material needs to be 228 mm diameter.
The pressure plate needs to be for a dished flywheel.
The B21 stuff is different, 99% sure, only B21's with dished flywheels (afaik) are the 1984.5 TIC models.
I saw that you called, i couldnt answer it during dinner, busy afterwards. I'll check tomorrow if i have some clutch pieces. I have ~5 used clutches of various...
