Hi Rowuk, I totally agree that using amplification can have an effect on acoustic playing. However, this effect can be dealt with via practice. Unfortunately, amplification is necessary for acoustic instruments if you're playing with guitar players that won't turn it down, drummers who insist on being heard over everything else and synthesizer sounds bouncing off the wall. My experience has been: for a long time I tried to keep up...

Making mistakes in a scale is simply poor preparation. Slightly less range coupled with excellent preparation will usually come out ahead in a high school audition.

Amado Water Keys
Published (2009-11-25 03:04:00)
Both my Getzens have Amado water keys and they drain at slightly different trumpet angles - search for the correct angle, and put a little valve oil on the water key regularly too. In the short term, the gurgling can be overcome by lifting your bell a bit.

There are some really good books by David Hickman that incorporate use of Flow Studies, lip bending, and pedals. I am not sure how to order them since he doesn't publish all his own stuff, but I am sure someone here can put you in the right direction

soft quiet practice but with a clear fat tone. Lots of long tone with crescendo decrescendo and efficient air use. Relax. I think the hardest thing to do is to play quietly with a great sound.

if it is not coming out, the spit is not where the key is. You have to find out where the spit is collecting and angle your trumpet to where the spit ends up at the hole. The valve itself just opens and closes. It can't be guilty (unless your horn is filthy inside and the valve is plugged up..........).

It would have been nice to have seen more of the band. They never put any focus on them, even though they are one of, tied with Bruno's reactions to dances, the most entertaining part of the show.
By the way, Kelly should have got 2nd and Mya got 3rd.

I started switching between trumpet and baritone during high school. When I started playing brass again it was baritone first this time, then back to trumpet, which was always my first love as well.
I never had any problems other than the trumpet mouthpiece feeling a bit small after playing baritone. Some players find that feeling more exaggerated than others. When I play baritone first I ...

Only your teacher can say for sure.
Your goal should be to slur slurs and tongue unslurred passages.
No-Pressure mania is not necessary or sensible. Unless a teacher is guiding you, you should attempt to gradually improve. Drastic measures just bring frustration. The human body simply does not work that way.
My students with too much pressure get breathing exercizes first, then ...

Yup, and it is pretty sad! Probably the spammers fault! TM need a verification code system for creating an account, or as B15 said, a posting limit before you can post a new thread!

Hey blue, nerves have never been a problem for me, because i killed them young. I gig a lot with my mom and its made me learn just to be confident and do your best. the more you perform in front of real people you dont know, the more you'll be comfortable performing in the auditions. I dont know if you play jazz, but those are the kind of gigs that will get you comfy. i might suggest you get a ...

Ok, this may turn into a bucket of worms, but I'll give it a shot.
first of all, the lips are sort of a generator, their movement gets the standing wave or resonance in the horn kickstarted and afterwards interact with the resonance to change its frequency or amplitude (ultimately the loudness that we percieve). There are 4 major forces that affect the lips: the muscle tension, the pressure ...

Firstly, roll your shoulders and RELAX. You'll realize one day that not everything goes perfectly every time. Chris Tedesco (to paraphrase an ITG interview) says he can't care what his chops feel like, you just gotta have that sound and play well. So take his advice, just let your body do what it does, and focus on being musical.
Also, when my chops are tight etc, during a hot shower I ...

Well, I can't really understand what you are saying. Basically, this is what I comprehend: you bought a microphone and have noticed that sometimes it seems like you overblow. Much of this may be due to the microphone, because if it doesn't compress the audio at all, it will always sound like you are blairing. Another part of it may be that when you blow hard the pitch becomes squirrely and ...

Re: Broken Embouchure Jarrett,
you are in a different situation than most as you have been making your living with the horn. We can therefore assume that you have more than basic functionality and that the "basics" of breathing and body use are well enough covered - otherwise you would have had problems much earlier.
There can be physiological issue, perhaps "overuse", I don't ...

Nick,
this time of year is school band concert season and we will get many more such posts for players wanting to doctor up symptoms of bad practice habits.
Granted, there are real issues with nerves (in my case because of blood pressure 215/150). I have found no evidence in recent threads that qualifies though.
Nerves is something that is VERY dangerous to handle on the internet. ...
