Thanks for the link. Like I said before, I'm OK with the music but a novice with the technical stuff. Steve

Chuck, Absolutely AWESOME! We may have a bunch of TMers that have never seen a 78 before. The 78s were the beginning of reasonable consumer purchaseable entertainment. They were called 78s because they rotated at 78 RPM. They were replaced eventually by the LP, so called because it had a Longer Playing time. It rotated at 33 1/3 RPM. The LP was then eventually replaced by the CD. Gramophone record - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Repertoire and Arranging for...

I'd start looking outside of trumpet repertoire. The easiest place to look is choral music, it's mostly already done for you, you just have to create good octaves and things, then there's always the string quartets. Working on things meant for other instruments can be harder than working on trumpet rep. That said, I've been managing my colleges trumpet ensemble of twelve players...twelve trumpets = not much fun music to...

I played solo on the concert band version years ago with the local community band. I've also played a brass band version of it recently, but I like the concert band version better. It's a nice piece of music for the trumpets - lots of different parts.

Our community band plays it every few years. It's a great song. http://www.mymccb.org/music/Valdres.mp3 is a non professional recording of our performance of it in April of 2005. Fred Gribbell is our lead trumpet player and soloist on this piece.

Double Tonguing on Moving Notes
Published (2009-12-05 03:33:00)
Along with all this, I have been told and believe that swinging the sixteenths works well to line them up. My first trumpet teacher introduced this concept to me. You take whatever rhythm you want to play, slow it down, and play the notes swinging instead of straight. Once you get the line down, you switch back to playing the notes straight. They seem to always come together better afterwards. Slotting improves, and it could help you with...

Double Tonguing on Moving Notes

Lots of good advice. I also think it is helpful to practice going back and forth between single repeated notes and changing notes. Take something like the 4th clarke study and play it double tongued, changed the first and third beat of the first measure( and third measure etc) to be repeated 16th's double tongued, then play the 2nd and 4th beat as written also double tongued.

We have done it several times with the antiphonal trumpets and the trumpet solo at the beginning. I have changed my approach to it over the years. Some do the pick-up detached and staccato in style. Others more full value. I tend to go with the more lyrical approach as it is such a unique march. Remaining calm and relaxed it crucial IMO so the air flow is even and smooth for the first interval. It is also critical to have a good communication...

The horn doesn't make any difference. They are equally playable on the Bb and Eb. A Bb probably even sounds closer to the original keyed trumpet. The Eb is no crutch as if the player even deserves to be on stage with this piece, the technical part is covered. Musicality is not limited to a pitch of horn. It is in the head of the musician. The crutch stuff only comes from the lazy that ...

Use your best instincts in arranging. Split up the melody among the different parts, but do it at logical places. Give everyone some rest now and then, and if you know the people you are arranging it for, give each person a chance to shine by featuring them doing what they do best.
