Two things are for sure: You'll never get your money out of a restoration unless you got the donor bike dirt cheap, have excellent resources, and do the work yourself and I'm thankful that there are people out there willing to pay somebody to do restorations and overhauls, otherwise I'd be on the street.

Hi Caulky Gearing is a personal thing and depends on your riding style. I prefer higher gearing for the economy aspect and a decent top end My other "three" gears are fine for town work. 4000 rpm is a nice place to be for the motor, I pull around 70 -80mph at these rpm.

My '72 5 speed, with a 19 g/box sprocket, in 5th, runs 659rpm at 10mph. So at 60 we are ticking over nicely at 3954rpm. At 70mph I'd need to squeeze a bit more 4613rpm, and 80 (who can hold on at this speed ???) the old darling is really licking her lips at 5272rpm (look...

As I`m up to my earholes in gears, chains, clutch and related stuff, I was wondering if the 650 engined model was different to the 750. The rear sprockets are similar 47 teeth. As are the motor sprockets 29 teeth (V models triplex) The gearbox sprockets are 20 teeth (V models) and 19 teeth (T120). Mine has 20 teeth. The primary chains are both 84 links (V triplex) The rear chains are 107 links (V) and 106 links (T120) Now the clutch...

Gee, I would think that any standard Jap two bolt clamp type mount would work if the stud were long enough. As for keeping the vib mount, just cut a bushing the length of the iso mount to prevent you from crushing it. I'm in the process of bringing an old Honda Super 90 back to life. I have an extra set of mounts that I can compare to my T140V and see if they look like a decent fit. They are isolated mounts as well. If you are building a...

Best way to clean up tank threads
Published (2009-12-04 23:23:00)
Depending on how bad the threads are, you might try using something like the brass metal brush that you screw on the end of a gun cleaning rod. The 22 guage for the screw holes and maybe a 410 for the tank petcock threads. Threading/screwing these in the holes would clean the "crude" out of the threads, and then you could see if you need to do any thread repair as others have discussed. Good luck.

Thumbnail pics are not working. Need to put it on a website and then link to it.
Not sure if there are shims in the Triumph engine. I guess the two points you make, no oil changes and those bits of steel found pretty much make a case to tear into the bottom end.
I saw a Norton engine this summer that had a snap ring come loose. It beat the crap outta the rods and lots of other places. ...

Hi Quagmire,
I'm not one of the oldtimers, in fact I was not even born when the guys in Meriden started their sit in! But I would just be looking at good routine maintenance, regular oil changes both engine & gearbox, while you're there clean (or replace depending upon the bike you've got) the filters, valve clearances, have a look at the plugs and decide if they need replaced, they will ...

I think when you get you new battery, you will have better luck...
My bike sat for awhile and even though my battery charger was telling me it was fully charged, it just wouldn't start my bike, alot of sweat and tears, then I got a new battery and it started w/ the second kick.

My 1968 Triumph TR6R was called a Trophy. I think later oil in frame bikes were called Tigers.

Could it possibly be a TT Special? There must be an index of VINs that could tell you, but the only other way to tell is to park it alongside a normal 650 of the same vintage. The TTS is noticeably smaller. Forks are obviously non-stock. Does the seller have a clear title? If it is a TTS, it's worth at leas twice as much as the regular model if not more.

Hi headtube!
I was intrigued so I ran outside to check my 78. I bought it from the original owner so I'm pretty sure it's unmolested. Can't help you with the left switch. Mine just says "hi/low" for the headlight beam and, arrows for the L/R turn and "horn"....for the horn. The right switch has LUCAS made in England on the top part and the numbers you mentioned, upside down, on the bottom....
