Accommodation close to airport!
Published (2010-01-01 14:32:00)
Hi, what time is your flight? Trains to the airport take about 15 minutes from the main station in Zurich (very centrally located with lots of hotels in the immediate area) and start at about 5 AM (there is one at 4 AM but it takes 41 minutes) so if your flight is international and leaving earlier than 7 AM, you won't be able to use the train. If it's after 7 AM, you should be fine. There are great hotels around the airport as well...

Thanks everyone for your responses, and sorry to have left this out there for a few days. I still don't fully understand how the transfer ticket works. Once I purchase it (before January 1st), do I then purchase the actual train tickets upon arrival in Switzerland, or can I purchase them on line 30 days before and receive the transfer ticket discount? I'm probably making this more complicated than it is but still want to proceed...

You might like the Helvetia, which is located on top of a hip bar/restaurant. Also, the Adler is right in the middle of the old town - Niederdorf. They have a really nice breakfast buffet.

H5 TarynA, Sorry I don't have any recommendations for a hotel (I've only stayed in one in the city and cannot recommend it). Just wanted to let you know the relative cost of taxi vs. train to the airport. A taxi will be around 50 chf, maybe a bit more depending on traffic. The train will be around 7 chf each. Also the train will probably be quicker, as there are no problems with traffic, etc. Anyway, have fun! s

Dear Zuricher bibliophiles, this question is for you. Which are the best second-hand, German-language bookstores in Zurich ?

If you have already bought the Lausanne to Paris ticket then I am too late but the half fare card covers the bit between Lausanne and Vallorbe (Swiss border). This isn't much but if you do buy the card, worth getting. If you already have your ticket Lausanne to Paris, then forget this!

Any tour operators to recommend?
Published (2009-12-29 19:08:00)
I'm thinking of doing a semi-free-and-easy tour. I'm thinking of flying to Zurich , sign up with a tour operator for a trip to Zermatt /Matterhorn. Any recommendations for a reliable tour operator other than Trafalgar tours and Conitki? Thank you!

Accommodation close to airport!
Published (2010-01-01 06:13:00)
My mom and I will be taking an early flight out of Zurich on a Sunday morning. We are looking for decent budget accommodation for one night. We will only be coming into Zurich early afternoon, and will therefore spend the evening walking around, so looking for something central, but also easy access to the train station probably to get to the airport. Or we may just end up catching a taxi! Any suggestions? THANK YOU!!!

The out line of your plan is a bit too ambitious for just 4 nights I would reccomend you perhaps drop staying at St Moritz and stay in Chur for one night you could then pick up the Glacier Express there. The next day take the GE as far as Brig and then the state railway SBB to Spiez changing for Interlaken. You could then spend the remaining time exploring the Bernese Oberland . As for...

There is absolutely no need to pay a tour operator to take you to Zermatt from Zurich . You can catch a train to Zermatt at the airport train station (it's right in the airport so no need to take any bus, etc.). You have to change trains in Visp but everyone has to do that....it's an easy change from the platform where you arrive (usually 6 or 7), down to the underpass and up to ...

well yes, you can do this BUT if Zermatt is cloudy or foggy you will not be able to see the Matterhorn. I know people who went to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn, spent 3 days, and saw nothing! It is always betetr to check before you go (Tourist Office will tell you what the weather looks like).
It will take about 3 hours to get from Milano to Zermatt. Another 3 to get to ...

The 230v are more common in Europe, in Cyprus they even have 240v but as much as I knoow it doesn't really matter, the diffrence is too small and this number has never been that fix. Most things I buy have somthing like 220-240v written on. Important is just that you have the right plugs and don't use things made for 120v.

Ah there are many gems.
Once nice one is called "Antiquariat der Literatur" and is located on Universitätstrasse 17.
A nice way to get there is take the Polybahn funicular from Central to ETH and then walk about 3-4 minutes.
FYI - James Joyce lived right across the street from the bookshop.
