Yes, the cheapest way is by bus (***IT'S ALSO THE MOST DANGEROUS WAY TO TRAVEL***) - I highly suggest that you take the train from Danang south or fly. DON'T BE ANOTHER STATISTIC! Vietnam's highways are dangerous places because bus drivers are very very very BAD DRIVERS.

You don't say which city you will be visiting first, so it's impossible to advise you where to buy a grinder and coffeemaker! I suggest that seek the advice of one of the staff at your first hotel.

I don't understand why the thread about this great group of uni students has been removed can someone please shed some light? certainly they were not self-promoting..I was just telling everyone what a great service they offer- they are non-profit- and will take anyone out in Danang and HoiAn for no-charge and show them around and tell them all about their wonderful city. my family have already used their free service and they were so...

Yep I agreed with Lotus, If you only have 4 days and you would like to embark on the real adventure combine with local home stay, boat trip, walking ( soft trek), photo taking then the trip to Ba be and Cao bang will be nice compare to Sapa. However to cover both Ba Be and Cao Bang will make your trip a bit tight since you don't have much time spending in Ba Be, so best to go straight to Pak Ngoi and stay the night there in local house....

ah yes, but they're not making it easy for people to book online with them are they? That's my point. I am not the only one who has had problems.

For records alone, not needed for inside the passport. I've been told they only want one but the on-line service says to complete two forms and have two pictures, guess I'll see in April, my first time using the on-line service.

If you dont want to have much touristique you should choose to to Ba Be and Ban Gioc waterfall.I think it is very intersting tour.
You can do like this one:
Day1: Hanoi - Ba be- sleep inside Ba Be National park.
Day2: Ba Be - Cao Bang
Day3: Cao bang - Ban Goc water fall - Lang Son
Day4: Lang Son - Ha Noi
However this road is not so easy to go.

We really loved Ninh Binh. It is just a 2 hr bus or train ride from Hanoi and has so much to offer.
We found the accommodation very reasonable and the people friendly.
We have some pics, maps and stories of our trip here... www.bobandjanette.com that may help.
Happy & safe travels

From what I remember in the cooking classes I took in Hoi An they do use peanut oil a lot in cooking so you would have to be very careful. Also generally Vietnamese food does often have crushed peanut sprinkled on top as a finishing touch.
The message you wrote translates as follows:
"Please note that I cannot eat peanut oil or peanuts. If I eat these it can kill me."...

Don't do it. Stand your ground. Just pretend you can't speak vietnamese.
I will. You will only make it worse for others because they know that they can do this.

i always take my visa credit card and use it in heaps of places. obviously not everywhere takes cc but, i couldn't say i've had any sort of problem. you must take cash as well, for those places which don't accept it.

IMHO both countries are easily doable but Thailand would be a better option for inexperienced asian travellers with children as standards are better generally and Thai people always really warm to children. Vietnam can be a bit harder work, especially coping with the traffic in the big cities, for the traveller as it is much less developed but a lot cheaper too. In Vietnam pay about ...

I do like these sort of reports..... straight and hard hitting. Thanks.
I do think you might well have hit on something though as to why a lot of people go to Viet Nam, like what they see but never return.
The motobikes. As you've mentioned it is difficult to wander around relaxed, when at anytime you expect to be hit by a kamkaze motobike while walking the ...

everyone stayed in Sofitel Metropole that i know just love the hotel. They even miss it when they are back home.
Choose the room in classic deluxe wing, cause the new wing opera has pretty small room.
If you dont like Sofitel Metropole, it's hard to say somewhere else is better. Maybe Hilton? or if you want lake view, for for Sheraton or Intercontinental.

Better still, arrange pickup with your hotel your staying with. They generally only charge about $10 and there is no hassle.
