VI versus Jamaica
Published (2009-11-11 07:52:00)
I have been to all 4 and all hold a special place in my heart for various reasons. Big differences: Cost - USVI is significantly more expensive than the other 3. Airfare is really high. Resorts are really expensive $400-$800 a night with nothing included. But you might be able to find a villa or small B&B type place for a good price. If you're traveling with a group, shoot for the villa - STT has a good number but St. John has a...

60 birhtday dinner

I love Agave Terrace which is on the East End (make sure you get a seating on the balcony and get there before the sunsets). Another really great restaurant for a birthday celebration is at Windows on the Harbor at the Marriott (go on a day where there are cruise ships in so you can watch the ships leave the harbor and ask to be seated by the window). I have also heard that Havana Blue and Oceana are great as well but I have not personally...

snorkeling charters for novices
Published (2009-11-12 13:14:00)
Again thank you so very much for all the advice. It's all helped me make a good choice. I think for the sake of my DH & his non-swimming, will stay on shore. Don't want him uncomfortable. I could wear the "patch" if needed. As many of you said, theres plenty of wonderful beaches to snorkel from. kealani, not mentioning a return trip yet, let DH fall in love w/ STJ 1st before bring it up, I have already from...

Is St John a good place for two...
Published (2009-11-13 19:48:00)
St John is NOT all honeymooners or retired people. Since it's 2/3 National Park, it attracts many active vacationers of all ages. There aren't any all inclusives in St John, because most people prefer a do-it-yourself vacation, rent a car, and get out and explore the many beaches and restaurants. There are only 2 large hotels - Caneel Bay and Westin, so there's no huge hotel area with a large concentration of tourists. This...

Vegetarian food on the island
Published (2009-11-10 21:51:00)
St Croix has, IMO the best food in the Virgin Islands. If you check out the restaurants ( you may need to go to their websites directly) http://www.gotostcroix.com/dining.php you can get an idea of what is available. Many of them are upscale restaurants which I am sure will cater to vegetarians. Here is another link which might help. 10best.com/St._Croix,U.S._Virgin_Islands/… My favorites are: Kendricks, Duggans, Savant and everyone likes...

snorkeling charters for novices

Hmmmm....If good snorkeling for you is the goal, and If one of you gets queezy and the other doesn't swim, then at a minimum, you'll need to go when the water is flat, and that's not entirely easy to predict. What's more, you normally have to make reservations and deposits in advance, so that lessens the chances you could pick a completely calm day. Other than the Indians, Waterlemon Cay is the best snorkeling around, and...

Cottage Suggestion for 2
Published (2009-11-12 07:06:00)
I think your main problem will be a short stay. Mosr private homes will not rent for just a few days, it is cost prohibitive. That being said, we need more info. Will you have a car? What is your budget? (affordable is relative) What is your definition of Secluded? (You can stay out in Coral Bay but that isn't possible without a car) What are your dates?

It is commonly thought to be about the Royal Mail Inn on Hassel Island with a combo of the Water Island Hotel , called Sugar Bird in the 70's, thrown in. The Royal Mail is fairly close in the descriptive sense and it is a work of fiction based in STT - but I have even heard the Hotel on Protestant Key in St Croix mentioned.
The Water Island Hotel was up above Flamingo Pt.

No, there's no restaurant. It's probably better to do this tour in the morning, because the best view is from the roof, and it gets EXTREMELY hot up there in the afternoon.
I think Sib's Restaurant is the closest. Right down the street from Sib's is Mafolie Hotel, and they have a restaurant.
Sorry, don't know about Hull Bay.

Parking at Mongoose is on a first come first, served basis and is available for people shopping/eating at Mongoose only (I assume that is what you will be doing) but there is no guarantee there will be any available and that is one of our busiest weeks so it will be doubtful - there will also be a parking attendant (most likely) at the entrance.

No organized weather just some showers and maybe t-storms. All of which will last 20 minutes to an hour. Check the NWS site - http://www.srh.noaa.gov/sju/ - daily. Besides we locals hope for rain to fill the cisterns.

I love The Fish Trap. You might want to give them a call to see if they are open on Thanksgiving. You might have a problem with finding restaurants that are open on this holiday. If you cant find anything open, just stay at Caneel. The food is always good there!!

I've been to a few Islands including STT, haven't been to Jamaica yet but have researched it quite a bit. I pay attention to the forum threads where islands are compared to one another also.
I am planning STT next year for a couple reasons-
Easy travel from the US
Great beaches and snorkeling
Lots of other islands close by (for visiting and visual effects ...

Just returned from a super stay on St John . Stayed at Tree Frog Cottage in Coral Bay and yes you do need a Jeep to get there and yes it is secluded. One bedroom, no pool or hot tub but a super place to relax and the view isn't bad either. I think the driveway was just paved last week. Has everything you need.

Hi Gooselee!
Hubby and I stayed at the Elysian in December 2007 - we are Wyndham owners so we went through the Wyndham affiliation. Our unit was clean - we had no issues with cleanliness at all - no problems with bugs, etc. The only problem we had was rude check in staff and blowing breakers. (Learned to fix that on our own...) The grounds were very clean - pool was clean, ...

There have been many threads about this topic recently. This product has been recently mentioned as excellent:

I can tell you from experience that, except for the product mentioned above, I have tried almost everything imaginable with limited success. If they are active and biting you are likely to get bit.

You found a good deal. It is the height of season and only 2 nights is hard to find.
You can try Inn at Tamarinf court, but that will be a basic room in a basic motel style setting in town. Nothing like Sailview.
I don't know the rest of your plans, so I don't know what to tell you, but I will say that 2 days on STJ would never be enough for me :)
