do you have a student visa? they are generally not given to 'study Italian' and you cannot legally stay longer than 90 days without a visa (there are not extended tourist visas) The 90 day limit is not for Italy, it is for all of Europe (the Schengen countries) and you may only spend 90 days of every 180 in these countries so before you decide where to stay be sure you have that in order There are many foreign students in Florence...

I assume you will have cars? To be honest there are not so many villas that sleep 10, so if you search on that basis that will narrow down your choice considerably. Sounds like you need to be somewhere close to a train station on a mainline, so that should narrow things further.

I put together a trip for 4 couples in 2007 - they had never been to Italy and I have been fortunate to have enjoyed many trips there. We flew into Venice and spent 2 nights, then trained to Florence and spent 4 then to Rome for the last three. This worked well for us as we are all into wine and food - IMO Tuscany is a winner in that regard. And day trips from Florence are easy. I would also not bother with the CT - too far, too touristed and...

Just so you don't get too upset when you're in Italy, there is really no such thing as a guaranteed connection. And it is not at all uncommon for trains to be late and for connections to be missed. Should this happen, find the nearest place for a coffee or other drink, relax and enjoy yourselves. On journeys between Vernazza and Lucca, with two changes of train in a short journey, you may need to remember that 'to travel...

I forgot Santa Croce, which is much higher up on my list than my forgetfulness would imply. Tombs and memorials to the famous of Italy. Rafael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Galileo and Dante, etc. etc. Also important frescoes. The last time we were there, one year ago, there was lots of refurbishment work going on, but a Franciscan Friar was playing the organ to distract us from the construction chaos. Upstairs around back is the leather school....

Actually usually there is always a heat wave at the end of the month. I am not a huge fan of the summer heat, and, although in old houses you will probably be fine, if your trip is at the end of June, air conditioning might make your stay more comfortable. This said, it's still not very widespread in Italy. athomeintuscany.org/2009/…

Hi Emma, You could check if Casa Cornacchi Country House fits with your exigences: http://www.cornacchi.com/. It's located in Montebenichi, Chianti and in my opinion is a good base in the area. They have a pool and offer also self-catering apartment. Ciao !

The weather varies considerably from year to year in winter in Italy in general. We were in Florence for 11 days in Feb 2009 and it did not rain a single day.

I can't answer your question, but Lucca is not a large town and is built on the flat. You can easily walk to any restaurant inside the walls, if that is the concern behind your request.

Don't get caught up in a specific make or model of the car. The rental agencies can and probably will change that and give you a different model or make but something in the same size range. What you should look at is the agencies estimate on the number passengers and the amount of luggage that the model car you rent will carry.

Montalcino is a great little town for a base to explore parts of Tuscany and Umbria . We've stayed there 3 times and it's very easy to get into and out of the town by car.
There are several very good restaurants in Montalcino and it's the center of the Brunello wine area. Montepulciano, the Abbey Sant' Antimo, Pienza, etc., are easy and short drives from the town. http://www....

Three thoughts:
1. Older buildings (before A/C) were built with thick walls, and often equipped with shutters --- they are generally comfortable even in hot weather.
2. If no A/C, then it is best to ensure they have screens on the windows, so that you can open them for cross ventilation without mosquitos.
3. Elevation is everything! There can be considerable differences ...

Single fares on Regional (no bookings) trains from Viareggio are €2.40 to Pisa and Lucca and €6.60 to Florence - simply multiply by eight for your trip costs as your children pay adult fares in Italy. http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html
Fuel and toll costs if driving would be around 25% less than your trip cost by train, so a car might at first sight seem to have ...
