Train from Leiden to Amsterdam...
Published (2009-12-01 20:59:00)
Yep there is no city called Schiphol just like there is no city called JFK or La Guardia. Schiphol International airport serves Amsterdam and is one of the busiest in the world but very easy to negotiate. Its all in one building. The train station runs right underneath the terminal so just get off, go up the escalators and head upstairs to Departures (I presume you need to catch a flight?)

It's no problem. Take the train leaving 5.39AM at Leiden Central on track 5b, it goes straight to Schiphol and arrives at 5.56 See also www.ns.nl

Thank you so much! So Schipol is the airport itself? Meaning, when I get off at Schipol, that is the airport, not the city?

As someone who has lived here for almost ten years I would say, without question, Enkhuisen. You can get there easily by train from Amsterdam If you or a friend who have a car drive first to Leyleystad then over the dyke. It is only by doing that you come to appreciate the scale of the Zuider Zee reclamation. Enkhuisen itself is, to me, the prettiest and one of the most interesting towns in NL.

I`ll be in Maastricht in Jan 5th for only a day and would like to know if anyone would have a suggestion of what is not to be missed so that I can use my time appropriatelly while there. Thanks in advance.

The places you mention that you still want to see are the most important ones. Start with The Hague (my town) and Delft.

Looks like you haven't been North yet? Depending on how much time you have... the islands are nice, as are Groningen and Friesland.

Flying in from London...
Published (2009-11-28 10:11:00)
Rotterdamm Airport is much closer to The Hague than Amsterdam and the best way to get to The Hague would be by taxi from Rotterdam Airport to The Hague. If you are dependent on public transport then the train service from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport would be easier and better. Also, there are more flights from London to Amsterdam than to Rotterdam.

As far as I know, the Alkmaar cheese market only takes place during the summer months.
Alkmaar is quite a pretty town but I wouldn't say it has a lot to do other than the cheese market. I would recommend visiting Leiden, Delft or Haarlem instead. There is a Beatles Museum in Alkmaar, though its small and more for true enthusiasts only.

Sounds like a good plan ion general.
Here on the Amsterdam forum we are biased towards this great city of ours, so we would say spend all your time here! ;-)

I would suggest the Maritime Hotel for a group. Also most probably the cruisehotel on former cruiseship SS Rotterdam will be open.
For lowbudget the stayokay might be an idea. Located in the cube houses.

Apart from both earlier replies, I guess it depends from where in the the Hague area you need to be. If that is close to either the Central train station or the Hollands Spoor train station, I would go for Amsterdam , because then it would take you about half an hour by train from the airport (with frequent trains), and indeed, the trainstation at the airport just underneath it. If you...

Hello,
You can use http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ to look for public transport.
It seems to me that you can take a train to Assen and a bus to Stadskanaal.
Cheers,
Dennis
